530 wake up??? Habitual? Developmental?!!
« on: January 21, 2017, 11:59:13 am »
Looking for some advice for our 6 months old sleep. On the whole his sleep is ok but we are battling the 530 wake up and nothing we have tried seems to conquer it. I'm pretty sure it's habitual as it's the same time every morning give or take 10 mins! When he wakes he cries - and with his cries they never die off they just become more intense until he's near on hysterical!! Hubby goes in to try and settle him and he just cries and cries and cries. Doesn't settle at all. I've tried Feeding him and treating it like a night waking and he might take some but not much but still won't sleep! Then the 7am feed or so goes off because he's not hungry enough?!

We have introduced a small amount of dinner in last few days, though the 530 wake ups have been happening before this...and I did think he might be waking to full his nappy or pass wind but that's sometimes but not always the case?

I'll post his easy so you can see where we are:

Wake 530 - try and settle til 615 or so then into our bed. Sometimes will feed and go back to sleep til 7, other times just feeds and then starts talking;
E 630/7
A solids at 830
Top up bf at 10
S 10/1020 for 2 hours
Y

E solids at 1230,
A
Offer bf at 230ish
S 330/4pm for 30/45 mins capped
Y

E dinner at 530
A bath at 630
Bf and asleep by 730

Will then sleep through til 230/3 when he will have another feed? We recently dropped the 10 feed and he seems to have taken to it fine?

I'm wondering if part of it is developmental too as he's babbling a lot? He's stopped rolling over and hates tummy time but makes moves to go forward if your holding him?

Also the other day he did his 2 hour 20 nap in day and then didn't do afternoon nap and was awake til 630 fine and didn't affect his nighttime apart from to wake at usual times? It doesn't seem to matter if we do bedtime a bit earlier or later he still has the 530 wake up?

I tried W2S twice this week, once he slept a bit later til 550 and then next time woke at usual time?? Do I keep going with it?!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi! His routine looks good to me... his A times are a bit on the high side.. I'm at around 3.5 hrs-3.45 and he's 11mths. His morning A time he's up from 5am to 10am? ...they are a bit high. Is he OT during the day? I know OT can cause night disruptions and EWs too. Something to think about.

Teething? How about outside noise or light? With those cries you described, it sounds like pain... discomfort?

The times my LO did EWs was when teeth were coming through.

I would say developmental but when u say he wakes screaming the way he does... I would assume pain of some sort. Developmental would be more like waking and babbling, rolling around etc.

Hugs :) hopefully this passes quickly!

I am still struggling with some of the same issues with my 7 mo. We had the exact same bedtime and wake up as you. When I pushed his bedtime to 8pm, he now sleeps until 6am. lol. So at least I get to sleep until then. I kind of realized that he was only going to sleep 10 hrs no matter what so I pushed later and now it at least feels better to me.

We are still struggling with waking up on and off from 5am-6am, but that is better than waking up from 4am-5am, at least for my brain!

I am afraid I have to say I have the same problem. (And I had it exactly the same before with my first LO though he was happy when he woke, not crying like yours and my second ... the first eventually started sleeping till 6 /6:30 by 2yrs, so maybe we just have to wait.  :o )

You'r LO is 6m? He is younger than mine, (10m) but I have been having this problem since then, combined with a lot more NW. I am going to try W2S at 3:30. I have never used the technique before, but I am willing to try anything.

Our schedule is very similar to yours except I do first nap at 9 and out BT is by 7.

Good luck, it sure is tough in the EW trenches.
