Help with 10month old routine- Fluctuating between 3 and 2 naps
« on: January 23, 2017, 09:21:09 am »
Hi. I have a 10month old and we are struggling to find a consistent routine that helps him to sleep soundly at night and would appreciate some guidance. Currently we are alternating between two and three naps a day. We have been trying to stick with two however are finding that the earlier bedtimes mean he wakes earlier and then eventually needs three naps to 'reset' almost. On days he has three naps he sleeps much better at night (only waking twice which is good for us!) However he also wakes later the next morning which means we can't fit three naps in the following day without a really late bedtime.  On days he only has two naps he wakes multiple times after going to bed around 6:30 until around 10:30 before having a longer stretch. We're unsure if he is overtired on these days. We can only ever get him to nap for an hour at a time during a day and he wakes happy most times so also not sure how to extend naps to possibly push bedtime later. Hope this makes some sense! We would be grateful for any ideas or tweaking of routines.

Two Nap Day

6:45 Wake up and feed
7:45 Breakfast
9:45 Nap
10:45 Awake
11:15 Feed
12:15 Lunch
1:45 Nap
2:45 Awake and snack
3:45 Feed
5:15 Dinner
5:45 Bedtime Routine (bath, book, top up feed)
6:15 Bed

Three Nap Day
6am Wakeup and feed
7am Breakfast
8am Sleep
9am Awake and snack
10:30am Feed
12pm Sleep
1pm Awake and lunch
3pm Feed
4pm Catnap
4:30pm Awake
6pm Dinner
7pm Bedtime Routine
7:30pm Bed

Thank you!

Karen

Hi Karen and welcome to the boards  :)

I would be looking to push your A times out a bit now if your LO is 10 months old. Could you start by extending his first A time and see how you go? Maybe by 15 mins the first few days. This should help you to get a longer nap as he will be more tired for it. This then helps to push back the rest of the day  :)

Have you seen these?

What do you think?

Thank you. I was just looking at those. We have tried a longer awake time in the past but probably not stuck to it because he tends to have shorter naps. Would you suggest just keeping him up even if he shows tired signs and his body will adjust to it?

Yes absolutely - their bodies get use to certain sleep patterns and need help pushing through them to adjust their body clocks. At 10 months old you are probably looking at getting ready to move towards the 1-2 nap transition so I would be looking to drop that 3rd nap if you can. x
