2-1 help
« on: February 07, 2017, 14:40:37 pm »
Hello

I could do with some help with surviving the 2-1 transition which I think we are in. My lo is 12.5 months.

She is becoming more and more reluctant to take her afternoon nap. Messes around in her bed, chats, decides it's a great time to do a poo. Basically anything but sleep.

I seem to have her morning nap timed just right. I put her down roughly at 3.75 hours of A she is normally asleep within 10 minutes. The first problem is that I have to wake her at 11.45 regardless to pick my eldest up from pre school. I then normally try and put her back down just after 3 for the afternoon nap. Lately it's been getting to 4 and she's still not asleep but she is tired, rubbing her eyes, being on the verge of sleep but then just jolting into being wide awake again. I've started sitting on her floor cuddling her to sleep just so that she gets 10/15 minutes as I feel that is better than her going to bedtime without one. My eldest ends up watching Tv by herself and dinner is sat waiting to be made :-(

What are my options? I thought about cutting the morning nap even shorter but I reallly worry that if she still refuses to sleep in he afternoon, she could be going all day with very little sleep. Letting her just have the 1 nap I don't think she is ready for, especially as it would be 12.30 before we get home and she can be in bed. She generally sleeps well at night, normally for around 11 hours. She is teething which isn't helping and starting to cruise.

Thank you!

Hi clarem,
That's tough because you're tied to a schedule.  Fwiw, here is the page for tips on the 2-1.

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

7 hrs to bed is long, and most likely will cause OT.

2 naps- shorten the morning nap and make second nap around 3.5 hrs, then 2-3 hrs to bed. I know you're hesitant to try this, but it's one of the options that works around your schedule.

The gradual way for 1 nap- early bedtime since you have no wiggle room for the first nap, as early as 5:30/6:00. She may wake earlier, but you can put her down at 10 and give her a good 1.45 for nap. As she gets older, every week or two, push the nap to 10:15, 10:30, 10:45, etc... When she's at 11:00/11:15, you'll have to jump to nap at 12:30 and adjust accordingly... as if there was a time change.

The cold turkey way for 1 nap- jump nap to 12:30 and bed around 6:30/7 (asleep). I don't think your DD is ready for this, but in a couple of months she may be.

Give it a good 3-5 days and see how she adjusts.

We were apop'ing that pm nap in the car for a few months... as late as 5:30 some days and into bed 2 hrs later. You can also always try the pm catnap, and if she doesn't take it, do EBT.

Here's an active thread on the 2-1 that might offer some insight. Hope it helps!

Thank you for your suggestions. The last couple of days I have woken her after an hour in the morning. She has slept in the afternoons albeit 30/40 minutes so total day sleep isn't great but I think that's all I can do to muddle through at the moment. I agree she is no way ready to go to 1 nap yet and I'm not either!

Haha... dropping naps aren't usually fun.

Glad to hear she's accepting the pm naps lately.  Yes, you do what you can until their tiny bodies can handle the longer awake times.

So I could do with a bit more advice. As it's been half term this week we've been out and about and we haven't tried he afternoon nap at home. A couple of nights she slept 12 hours and one night 12.5 hours. Because those days she ended up waking so late, we only had time for 1 nap and she did ok. So I thought. Yesterday she had one nap 11.40-1.20. I put her to bed at 6. She took an hour and a half to fall asleep. Then cried out in her sleep I think hourly. At 1am I went to check she hadn't done a poo. She was then awake until 2.45  ??? She does seem to take around an hour to fall back if she ever wakes in the night but that just seemed ridiculous. Could it be that she was OT?
So back to the school routine this week and I've no idea how to attempt it. If I were to cut the morning nap short, how short would you go? I'm very cautious of this as it's her best nap. I'm worried she'll have 20/30 minutes and still refuse the afternoon nap. Feeling very stressed about sleep :(

When did she nap on the nights she did 12-12.5 hr nights? Can you list the EASY for the few days during break? What time was wake up that day she had a nap at 11:40?

She could've built some OT. But hourly wakings sound like discomfort to me. Is she teething at all? Get sick afterwards?

I'd like to see the EASY first and rule out any pain or discomfort, but it seems like she could've used a catnap that day around 4:30/5 and bedtime at 7:30 to prevent OT.

I know this is tough. It's a really difficult transition. Xoxo

So I could do with a bit more advice. We are now having a lot of NW and she is normally awake for an hour  ??? I was driving myself crazy and watching her on the monitor meaning I was awake too but my husband has managed to convince me not to do this as I was struggling to go back to sleep afterwards. I just find it hard knowing she's been awake but not knowing how long for. Anyway, I have no idea why she is waking. She cries out initially when she wakes but then she just lies there. Some times chatting but normally just lies there with her eyes open. We are still struggling with naps too. Occasionally she is having one but I think really she still needs 2, although the afternoon one is pretty hard going to get her to sleep (it involves a lot of me sitting on her floor holding her until she's asleep, which is very difficult as I have a 4yo too). She has recently cut her top molars which I hadn't even realised weren't coming until I saw they'd already come through. She doesn't yet have the front top or incisors so they could possibly be coming too. I give her medicine before she goes to bed.

I should probably also add that she is still suffering with wind. We are currently trialling her on a dairy free diet. It I don't think it's made any difference so far
