Help LO discovered rolling and will not nap
« on: February 27, 2017, 16:36:12 pm »
My LO is nearly 5 month old and discovered rolling back to front last week and since then either does not settle to nap at all or will nap for 25-40 min (usually mid day due to exhaustion or APOP).

She only rolls back to front in one direction and for some reason forgets how to roll front to back when in her crib. She either gets herself into uncomfortable positions and cry, or she is too busy rolling to settle down to sleep.

Prior to this milestone she went to sleep well on her own and napped 1.5-2h with 1.45-2h activity times.

She continues to sleep well at night (luckily)

Is there a light at the end of the tunnel???

Developmental leaps definitely mess with sleep!  Hang in there :)  But you may also need to push her A times - 1h45-2h is possibly a bit short for a nearly 5 month old, especially during a developmental leap when A times can take a bit of a jump.  I'd try putting her down a bit later, say 2h15, increasing to 2h30 if needs be and see if that helps x

Thanks for the suggestion!

At the same time we had to free her arms from her swaddled bag. She is struggling with transitions and can no longer settle herself back to sleep  :(

Hi - another thing to just hang on in there for - she will learn what to with her arms.... Have you tried HTTJ? Hold Through The Jolts is just that - go in just before she transitions (was 45 mins on the dot for us) and hold her arms gently to her body so they don't flail around and wake her up. You can start to lessen the pressure as she learns so that she gets used to having her arms free.

A Follow up question...

So when she does wake early from her naps and does not settle on her own or with support, how do you proceed with EASY?

Do you offer food then proceed with her regular activity time? Do you take into consideration the time she is awake and trying to settle back down? (pushing her time? Or following fatigue cues?)

What happens if she is not hungry due to early wake up?

I am confused on how to proceed

Thanks!!

I would tend to keep feeds roughly when they are due, and then shorten following A time slightly to prevent her getting too OT.  It doesn't matter if some parts of the day look like AEAS instead of EAS - you often find a short nap will be compensated by a long one elsewhere and somehow you will end up back on a reasonable track x

HI - Yes watch for sleepy cues after a short nap and shorten the a time down a bit. How is she getting on with her arms being out the swaddle now? Hopefully she is starting to get used to it now? x

She is getting better.
She is still struggling with transitioning through her sleep cycles (30-45 min) but we are still trying to find the magic AT

We tried 2.5h this AM and she woke after 30min :( I only spend up to 45min trying to extend. Due to fatigue we put her down after 2h for next nap and we got a 90 min nap. Then just over 2h for her next AT and she only slept 30min.

I find it extra challenging when her first nap is poor as I feel we spend the rest of the day trying to avoid OT.

Then she goes down to bed earlier than I would like b/c she is exhausted, which leads to early morning wake up.

A difficult cycle to break.

She was very miserable when we did the 2.5h AT I think we will scale back to 2.25 tomorrow and see what happens.

Wish me luck!

We stuck with 2.5h she went down with less fuss. But only a 30min nap, then she is wide awake rolling around and smiling when I come in.

Only 30min naps yesterday

I have never been able to extend her naps with shush/touch etc.
Is this normal? She is so awake. She just gets ed off the longer I am at it.

Is it worth it it continue after those short naps?

So confused... Is there hope or do I have to wait this stage out?

Yes there is hope! A change in routine often means a few days of adjustment as he body clock shifts. Keep going x

Thanks for the encouragement...
I feel like we made progress last nap...
Awake after 30 min... Spent another 30 min wide awake rolling around.. then fell back asleep intermittently for 40 min crying with eyes closed

:)

It got a little better:
First nap up at 30 min... Rolling etc. Got drowsy went back to sleep with a little help shush/touch after 30min... Slept for another 30

Second nap better only awake for 10 mins after her 30 min nap and she completed the 2h time slot...

That gave me hope of course...
Now today she did not go back down after her 30 min wake...

Does this mean we should increase AT again??

Update:
So we have had 4days of "perfect" napping and her regular one NW for feeding

Today her first nap was 2h after 2:15 AT (her AT shortened again after DST)
Now she has been resisting the entirety of her 2nd nap. Same AT and same cues that we have been following for past week.

Any thoughts?

She has been mantra crying for an hour. Shall we let her go at it alone until next feed as long as it does not escalate??

What is our next play? Increasing AT?

Thanks...

Back to 30min naps... Screaming and crying.

I can't seem to figure this out.

I think it sounds like an UT/OT loop....I would go back to a 2h30 A time consistently, I suspect after a short first A and good first nap (occasionally needed as a catch-up) she was UT and therefore resisted the next one.  And then got OT hence back to 30 mins.  DD used to do that, we had more luck if she wasn't asleep quickly in getting her up, playing for 15 more mins then putting her back down.  Left to her own devices she would just keep playing and never settle.  Then end up OT.

Hang in there x

That is what I figured.
Thanks!

Is there a growth spurt around this time (5.5 months). My LO woke twice to eat last night, I can't remember the last time she did that.

Yep - it's usually around 6mo (5,5-6,5) and tends to be close to moment when you start solid introduction!

We have been having LO sit with us during meals with her own dishes and spoons.

Need to think about actually putting food on her plate now :)

If you want to be 100% compliant with standards you can wait until 6mo but because of that GS we also started a tad earlier. And really even small amounts at that age made a difference!

LO chatting in her crib after 60 min. This is UT I assume. But I did increase her AT by 10mins today. I guess that was too little. Is it normal for a baby to require a 15-20 min AT increase in one day?

It can happen during times of developmental leaps and also if A times have been too short for a while :)  I wouldn't read much into one nap though, see what happens with the new A time after a few days and then increase again if needed x
