What is a 35 minute nap?
« on: March 03, 2017, 09:10:13 am »
Pretty much what the subject says...
My DD has been having a 35 minute nap for her first nap the past few days. She wakes from it with a cry out but after that she seems happy in herself. Is it OT or UT?

IMO it can be either and I'd suggest looking at the whole routine, what she has done before (ie how long that nap was and if it was reliable), what her sleep cycle has previously shown to be, if she can self settle, if there might be an discomfort (eg teething) bringing her out of light sleep to wakefulness, and age/developmental leaps - 4 months is prime time for the short naps to start so it may even just be developmental.

Would you like to post your EASY? And a bit of background?

Sorry I took me a while to write back
I figured the nap was UT as we had been doing about a 2hr a time and getting 35/40 minute naps so bumped it up to 2hr15. He other problem we have been having at the 2hr a is nap refusal for the second nap even with a short first nap.
Today is our first day with 2hr15

WU 0755
A 2hr17
S 1012-1052
A put down at 2hr10 nap refusal again and fell asleep at 2hr28. She likes a short wind down.
S 1328-1352
When she wakes her eyes just pop open no crying although she does get fussy later since she is probably still tired.
She is a chronic short napper and she hasn't had a nap longer than 55 minutes since she was 8 weeks. Even 55 ninutes is rare. It's usually 35-45
What do you think?

I am wondering if when first nap will be cut to 3if she will take a longer nap also after 2:30A.i would also be brace to push A times to 2:30. At almost 5mo she can be ready if LSN.

Sorry:) typing from my phone before.

I am wondering if first nap would be cut to 30min, she took a longer nap later. I would keep 2:30A. If she is ASN/LSN baby I would try the routine of:
7am wake up
7-9am Activity
9:30 - 10:00 Nap 1 capped at 30'
12:30 - Nap 2 - up to 2h
around 4:30 catnap of 30min to get till BT
7pm BT

This is a routine working well for LSN babies as it generates 3h of daysleep, but doesn't require 3h of A time which could be too much. When she is ready for 3h, you can go for 2 naps of 1.5h.

This was our day today

WU 0755
A 2hr17
S 1012-1052
A 2.5hr
S 1328-1352
A 2hr23
S 1615-1655
A 2hr35
BT 1930

I am willing to try what you wrote Martini, I guess I'm just scared that she won't take a long nap for the second nap and then what? Also, won't she be extremely exhausted with such a long morning A time and then only a 30 minute nap? I have never don 2.5 A for the morning. The first nap I could get her to fall asleep even at 1hr45. She likes a shorter morning A. The problem is we get refusals for the next nap.
Also, even though my DS is LSN I am still having a hard time excepting that DD is LSN as well. She was such a sleepy baby until 8 weeks. She slept so much day and night that such a big change seems strange to me. My DS was wide awake a week after he got home and has been ever since.

Mmmm my DS1 was a sleepy baby too but to get a good nap at 3/4months we were at high A times. I am just feeling being honest that Tracy reco for 4h EASY is a reco for HSN babies and really not many can get two long naps a day at that age when LOs need still 3 naps. With DS1 from 5/6 weeks till 12 we were on 4 naps but only two of them were good. Never 3, not to mention four. When we transitioned to 4h EASY at 12wo I got two long naps and a catnap almost immediately but at 4mo it was too much and DS1 was only doing one long nap and 2 catnaps. I tried to transition to 2 naps a day but he was just not ready and we went with 3 naps up to 8mo almost. Being honest - I was much relaxed with that once I got the message that short naps aren't messing with nights - you just to do more of them and sometimes more short naps are better than pushed longer ones.

I usually concentrate on 1 nap a day and resettle until success. With DS2 who probably is LSN we have your current routine now at 10weeks old. I mean I have 2:00 A followed by 45min capped nap and than 2:00-2:15A followed by 2-2:30 nap. The second nap was good on 4naps a day routine until around 7/8 weeks, than we transitioned to 3 naps and did morning nap of 1h. Than I had to cap to 45min around 8/9weeks so he still sleeps well on second nap. With DS1 I never did it and was fighting why the hell after a good morning nap I have 30min second nap. Well - because children need also short naps :))).

Hmmm ok I understand. I will give it a try and will really try hard to resettle the second if she wakes early. I think I will wait for Monday to try because the weekend is difficult for me with my DS home from school. I will update next week. Thanks martini

So I'm back and it has not gone well. DD definitely cannot handle such a long A time. She became so OT that I did a really early BT last night but she didn't tack on and woke today at 545. So I moved her back to 2hr A times and things were as they were before the 35 minute nap.
So today was

WU 0545
A 2hr
S 0745-0830
A 2hr17
S 1047-1117 OT
A 2hr05
S 1323-1503
A 3hr45 I know super long but we had a pipe problem and I was alone with both kids
BT 1850

Anyways I hope things continue like this because at least she does one long nap which is actually similar to what you were offering before but in a different order.
The 2 questions I have are:
1. I have to leave for the school run at 1545 at the latest which means I am stuck with a 6-18 day when I would prefer a 7-19 but if the last nap is the long one it isn't possible.
2. With a 2hr A time she is kind of in between 3-4 naps. I am pretty sure she won't tack on so much if I do shorter than a 12hr day and it will be very hard to do if we are on a 6-18 routine with both kids. But a 4th nap will make the day way to long, am I right?
