Help! 14mo NW
« on: April 06, 2017, 10:07:53 am »
Hello

I could do with some advice with NW please.
We have recently transitioned my 14mo to 1 nap as it was getting to be a real struggle to get her to have 2. On the whole, she is dealing pretty well with it and I think we are largely avoiding OT. however, she occasionally has nights where she wakes and will then stay awake for an hour or an hour and a half. I generally don't go in to her as this seems to make it worse and apart from crying for a few seconds when she initially wakes, she mostly just lies there talking to herself. The problem is, once she wakes me up, I have great difficulty getting back to sleep so this is affecting me a lot. When she woke at 2.50 one night last week that was it for me for the night! I do have anxiety and struggle to relax when I know that she is still in there awake.
So my question is how to survive with the NW. she has cut a lot of teeth recently but generally I think when these are causing her problems, she cries out in her sleep rather than waking to chat.
Would you still stick with a 1 nap the day after a disturbed night? I worry about making her OT. She doesn't have a dummy or anything else in bed with her.
I should also add that For naps she is normally asleep withon10 minutes but at bedtime it's more often 30/40 minutes which hasn't changed since she changed to 1 nap

Hi maybe you put the odd CN in if you think the Ot is building up? My DS2 is 14 months and we have mostly 2 nap dats and some 1 nap days.

Hello
Second naps became a nightmare (would only sleep if I was holding her) so I'm trying to avoid that as much as I can. Could the NW be due to OT?

It could be but generally OT NW are easily settled, if it's prolonged or lots of crying could be discomfort.

Can you not get a car CN in? I can pretty much get 20 mins if I time a car ride right?

I find if nap is less than 1.5 hours and ends before 2pm then I need another quick micro nap in otherwise we get night wake ups.

If you can only get 1 nap I'd prob try pushing to 12 noon and see if you can get a good 1.5/2 hour nap, or bring BT 15 mins earlier.

Do you try medicine at NW?

My goodness this sounds very similar to what is happening here, although transitioned to one nap a couple of months ago.  Keen to follow and hear suggestions.  In the meantime, take care :)

She generally cries when she wakes in the night - like she's upset at being woken. But then she will just lie there awake and sometimes chatting so I just leave her to it unless she cries again. I have been medicating before bed but have stopped as it doesn't seem to be making any difference. She has cut a lot of teeth recently.
Husband has the car for work so I can't do a car nap and I have my 4yo home with me so can't easily go out
I have tried bed at 6/6.15 on the days where she hasn't napped long but she still takes at least 30 minutes to fall asleep, sometimes longer :-/

Could be developmental, is she walking or babbling a lot? Might just be a case of keeping that nap at midday and waiting it out then if another nap is a no go.
I remember with my DS1 it took a good couple of months for the nap to get to 2 hours consistently x

yes she is babbling a lot. Only walking holding hands at the moment but i don't think it will be too long before she is off. I remember with my eldest it was only around 18 months that she started napping for 2-3 hours. Before that she would survive on 40 minutes! but she slept a solid 12-13 hours at night so I never really worried about it!

another question - lots of her naps are exactly 1 hour 20 minutes. She was a chronic 40 minute napper and now she seems to do 2 sleep cycles. Is there any way to lengthen them? Wake 2 sleep generally doesnt work with her

This first thing that jumped out to me when I looked over the routine is that I think she could be UT.  She's giving you decent WUs anywhere from 6:30-7:30am, so I would not do a nap before 12 noon.  1.20hr naps are also a pretty classic sign of UT.  I would actually try to set a nap at say 12:30.  My DD is slightly older, but we now have a set nap of 1pm and her WU is usually 6:30am.
