7 month old night wakings and routine help
« on: April 02, 2017, 23:12:26 pm »
Hi all,

I was previously posting in the 'General Sleep Issues' board and jessmum46 was helping me with suggestions.

6 month old nap and night time help needed

My son is now 7 months and I have managed to extend the first A time to 2.5 hrs and the second A Time to 2 hr 45 mins.
Routine is roughly as below, I am constrained by a school pick up at 3:15 PM - 3:35/40 PM

He puts himself to sleep, but resettling for naps and night (most often) requires me to feed him.
Yesterday was roughly

Wake up - 7 AM
Feed + Solids
Nap - 9:30 AM - Slept for an hour and then resetttled and slept till 11:19 AM. Approx 1 hr 49 mins
NOTE: Nap 1 is usually 1 hr - 1hr 20 mins if he goes without waking up. When we started extending wake times, he has done this couple of times last week.
If not, max is 1.5 hrs

Wake up - 11:19 AM
Feed + Solids
Nap - 2:01 PM. Resttled after 38 minutes. Slept till 3:17 PM Approx 1hr 16 mins
NOTE: Nap 2 is usually 1 hr - 1hr 20 mins if he goes without waking up. Although he does not do this as often as Nap 1.
If not, max is 1.5 hrs
Catnap - usually rock him or pram or drive - after 2:15 or 2.5 hrs. Naps for 25 - 30 mins.

Woke 6 PM
Feed + Solids
Night slept - 8:11 PM.

Woke every hour till 11:30 PM - 9:00 PM, 10:30 PM, 11:30 PM
He has been waking up after 40 mins - 1 hour immediately after going to bed. Sometimes he is screaming as if he had a nightmare. I can just pick him up and cuddle him and settle him back after this usually.
Then 1:30 PM, 3:30 AM, 4:30 AM broken sleep till 7:30 AM

1. Can someone review my routine. I am not sure how to extend A times further with the school run in afternoon.
2 I am desperate for some long stretches at night - how do I resettle without feeds? Also which feeds t cut out?
3. Naps are also still broken.

Please help. Any help would be appreciated.

Elsa

Following with you. Same story here. Teething? Does pain meds before bed make a difference?

Nap1 - Awake time - 2.5 hr - slept for 1 hr 10 mins
Nap 2 - Awake time - 2.75 hr - slept for 1 hr 26 mins

Were these wake times different?

Thanks malibu_nikkus. I haven't tried pain reliever. No, the wake times yesterday for the naps were exactly the same.

Another disastrous night yesterday, probably one of the worst. My older son and I have a bad cough as well so just feeling down overall, particularly after talking to a colleague who's son is 4.5 months and sleeps 7 PM to 6 AM. Don't know what I am doing wrong, feel so bad that I can't help my son sleep. :(

He was up from the last nap at 3:19 PM so he was probably tired. He had a catnap in the car yesterday from 6:00 - 6:22 PM that's where things went wrong probably.

Put him down at 8:20 PM, slept only by 8:45 PM. Then woke up at 9:30 PM, settled to sleep. Woke up screaming at 9:46 PM. Resettled. Then up, 10:45 PM, 11:45 PM. Fed at 11:45. However was not settling back till 12:15 AM. Took him to another room with me for the night as I was feeling too sick. Again was up 2:30, 4:30. Tried putting him back in the cot, no luck. Up 5:30 then up for the day at 6:52 AM.

Hope someone can just guide me as to what I should be doing better.

Elsa.

He has a cold now, so not sure if it is the cold but he went to bed at 8:12 pm and then was up 5 times in two hours and then got him into bed with me. He was still up every 2 hrs and then every hour after 4:30. Was too tired last night so fed him each time. :(

Hi Elsam,
Wow, what a rough time you've had. Hugs.. I know it is absolutely draining.

I'd like to suggest that you get through this illness, then commit to 2 weeks of weaning and sleep coaching.  We know that he doesn't need all the feeds, so you can try other comforting methods for the times you know for sure it is not hunger. Below is a link to general sleep questions we get... SH/Pat and PU/PD is what you'd want to look at for ways to help him sleep without feeding.

I think that maybe dropping the last CN will help with the school pick up issue, and also help get him properly tired for bedtime and night sleep. I agree with Jess that he may be a bit UT.

All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months

Did we rule out teething?
