Almost 2 yr old rejecting nap completely?
« on: May 01, 2017, 19:25:07 pm »
Hey all!

I decided to start a new thread since its really about his napping situation and possible molars. Twice this week already he has totally rejected his nap. For example he finally slept for 30 minutes on Saturday after rejecting his nap for 3 hours and having an A time of for nearly 8 hours! Today my child minder is saying he wont nap and is energetic. Its almost 3:30 pm and he has been up since 8:30 since he slept extra long last night. He had a nearly 12 hour night with 2 NW to redose (plus he has a small cough).

So is this normal for molars? Or is this a routine issue?

Sounds like the 2 year regression to me. You cannot make a LO sleep when they are bouncing off the walls can you! Quiet time or APOP in the car if yo have the ability to do this and then wait until it passes. Super early bed times to try and combat the OT help too. Good Luck!

Oh man! Another regression?! Lol

So in terms of bedtime, how much earlier?

Yesterday he finally napped an hour after a long A time. In those situations, what do I do about bedtime to avoid OT?

what time is his normal BT? Could you go really early - say around 6pm? It isn't something I ever risked TBH for fear of an EW but I have heard others recommend it here  :)

When he does nap I would keep BT the same TBH. Unless he is then UT and then you have to play it by ear  ::)

Lol UT is definitely worse!

His normal BT is between 8-8:30. The earliest I can realistically do is 7:30 pm bc of work. On days I have off I can definitely do earlier if needed.

His usual routine is:(give or take a half hour)

WU 7
S 12:30 pm (no later than 2:30 wake up)
BT 8 pm

At what point do you just give up on trying to have him nap? Lol

7.30 is OK, and you can try earlier on the other days.

I would have said that as he is not yet 2 you can expect the nap to come back unless he is exceptionally low sleep needs?

You could try pushing the nap back by 15 or more mins? We also struggled with UT and if he went down UT then a nap was so much harder than OT! It could be that he is UT and then gets himself OT (hence the energy as the adrenalin kicks in!)

We defo went through this at 2 years old. I'd try and get a nap then give up, sit him on my knee pop tv on and within 10 mins he'd be asleep....it did pass. Like pp says apop naps if poss to get you through.x

Thanks ladies! This helps!

Yea he's definitely not ready to drop a nap but I am wondering if pushing it back might help so it gives him more time to get tired out haha. He's been on the same A times for months. I mean obviously there were times I tweaked but it always came back to the same routine. Maybe it's time for a tweak.

I'm thinking pushing it back to 6 hours so something like:

WU 7 am
S 1-3 pm
BT 8 pm

Does that look reasonable for his age?

Ok! I can do this for a week and see what happens. Today he napped for 2 hours at a 6.25 A. He did wake for a little after an hour so maybe a little OT. I think a 6 hr A should work better. We will see!

One question: for his age, how would you go about getting him back to a 7-8 pm EASY? Somehow we created into a 8-9 routine 🤔

Thank you! We were on track yesterday but then he fell asleep in the car for an hr  after only a 5.5 A then went to bed after 6.25 A 😧

He had a horrible night after having a much better week with a later nap which led to sleeping through the night for the most part (one NW to redose if needed).

I'm of course freaking out on how to rectify this.

Yesterday:
WU 7:45
S 1:05-2:10 pm
BT 8:25 pm

NW 11:30; 3; 4:45-5:10 then dozed for 10 minutes and never went back to sleep!

What do I do in these situations to avoid a crazy sleep cycle from happening? He hasn't been up this early in a very long time.

What time is nap? BT?

HI - I think BT will depend on his nap today. I would try for an earlier nap and see what happens?
