Almost 2 yr old rejecting nap completely?
« on: May 01, 2017, 19:25:07 pm »
Hey all!

I decided to start a new thread since its really about his napping situation and possible molars. Twice this week already he has totally rejected his nap. For example he finally slept for 30 minutes on Saturday after rejecting his nap for 3 hours and having an A time of for nearly 8 hours! Today my child minder is saying he wont nap and is energetic. Its almost 3:30 pm and he has been up since 8:30 since he slept extra long last night. He had a nearly 12 hour night with 2 NW to redose (plus he has a small cough).

So is this normal for molars? Or is this a routine issue?

Sounds like the 2 year regression to me. You cannot make a LO sleep when they are bouncing off the walls can you! Quiet time or APOP in the car if yo have the ability to do this and then wait until it passes. Super early bed times to try and combat the OT help too. Good Luck!

Oh man! Another regression?! Lol

So in terms of bedtime, how much earlier?

Yesterday he finally napped an hour after a long A time. In those situations, what do I do about bedtime to avoid OT?

what time is his normal BT? Could you go really early - say around 6pm? It isn't something I ever risked TBH for fear of an EW but I have heard others recommend it here  :)

When he does nap I would keep BT the same TBH. Unless he is then UT and then you have to play it by ear  ::)

Lol UT is definitely worse!

His normal BT is between 8-8:30. The earliest I can realistically do is 7:30 pm bc of work. On days I have off I can definitely do earlier if needed.

His usual routine is:(give or take a half hour)

WU 7
S 12:30 pm (no later than 2:30 wake up)
BT 8 pm

At what point do you just give up on trying to have him nap? Lol

7.30 is OK, and you can try earlier on the other days.

I would have said that as he is not yet 2 you can expect the nap to come back unless he is exceptionally low sleep needs?

You could try pushing the nap back by 15 or more mins? We also struggled with UT and if he went down UT then a nap was so much harder than OT! It could be that he is UT and then gets himself OT (hence the energy as the adrenalin kicks in!)

We defo went through this at 2 years old. I'd try and get a nap then give up, sit him on my knee pop tv on and within 10 mins he'd be asleep....it did pass. Like pp says apop naps if poss to get you through.x

Thanks ladies! This helps!

Yea he's definitely not ready to drop a nap but I am wondering if pushing it back might help so it gives him more time to get tired out haha. He's been on the same A times for months. I mean obviously there were times I tweaked but it always came back to the same routine. Maybe it's time for a tweak.

I'm thinking pushing it back to 6 hours so something like:

WU 7 am
S 1-3 pm
BT 8 pm

Does that look reasonable for his age?

Ok! I can do this for a week and see what happens. Today he napped for 2 hours at a 6.25 A. He did wake for a little after an hour so maybe a little OT. I think a 6 hr A should work better. We will see!

One question: for his age, how would you go about getting him back to a 7-8 pm EASY? Somehow we created into a 8-9 routine 🤔

Thank you! We were on track yesterday but then he fell asleep in the car for an hr  after only a 5.5 A then went to bed after 6.25 A 😧

He had a horrible night after having a much better week with a later nap which led to sleeping through the night for the most part (one NW to redose if needed).

I'm of course freaking out on how to rectify this.

Yesterday:
WU 7:45
S 1:05-2:10 pm
BT 8:25 pm

NW 11:30; 3; 4:45-5:10 then dozed for 10 minutes and never went back to sleep!

What do I do in these situations to avoid a crazy sleep cycle from happening? He hasn't been up this early in a very long time.

What time is nap? BT?

HI - I think BT will depend on his nap today. I would try for an earlier nap and see what happens?

I wouldn't have done was Olly was hard to get to go to sleep UT - I would always err on the side of OT - but that was just us!

Haha agreed! Hudson is the same way. UT is a nightmare; last night being an example  :o

He finally conked out at 12:15. He was like an energizer bunny on steroids lol

Thankfully he has yet to skip a nap all together!

I am wondering if on the days he resists (like today with the nanny but she put him down too late), if his A time is around 7 hours after he FINALLY naps, what time is bedtime? Should I stick to bedtime at 8 even though he woke up at 6 today  ::)

His new attempted routine:

WU 7 am
S 1-3 p.m (as of this week)
BT 8 p.m.

I guess it depends on how long he naps. If it is a good catch up nap then stick with normal bedtime. If it is short then bring it forward 30 mins? x

I can try that since today he woke close to 5:30! 😩
I think it's molars again mixed with some OT.

Have molars caused EMW? I'm sticking to nap bc he doesn't really do longer than 12 hour nights. So instead of 1 maybe 12:30 since today is zoo day.

So update: he fell asleep at 10:15 am in the car lol I didn't see that coming since it was a short ride to the zoo. Do I wake him and try for a second nap or just let him sleep? He usually doesn't do this. When is bedtime then? UGggghhhhhh

Haha that's exactly what happened. He napped for a half hour in the morning then an hour he was knocked out in the car ride home. So at this point I'm going to attempt BT at 8:30 since he slept until 4:30 and I doubt he would be tired enough before then. Needless to say I'm winging it since the day is a wash.

Does 2yr molars cause crazy OT and EMW sprinkled with nap resistance?

His sleep is so crazy right now. :o

So my nanny just informed me that my son is refusing to nap again...He's been up since before 7 and its now 3 p.m...what's a good bedtime? I told her to at least get a 30 minute nap in...

He had a 12 hour night with a bunch of NW. Molars are definitely wreaking havoc and maybe the sleep regression. Should i consider cutting his sleep in some way or should I just leave it all alone until the molars come in?

I have been attempting the following but to be honest A times are everywhere!

WU 7 am
S 1-3 pm
BT 8ish

Yesterday went lilke this:

WU 7:00
S 12:30-1:30 pm (car nap coming home)
BT 7:15 pm

I'd keep trying to get a normal nap in but try a CN if all else fails, I wouldn't cut the nap at this time.

I'd go for a EBT if no nap try and catch up on Ot x

Thank you for the tip! I'll keep aiming for the same routine.

He ended up sleeping for an hour from 3-4 pm. DH is now with him winding down. I hope it's not too little A since he had such a long awake time before his nap smh

Hi! Well surviving!

I have been having short nights like only sleeping 9.5-10 hours not including NW. Monday nap resistance (but I think it was OT). The EMW not sure if it's OT or UT or teeth or regression related since he wakes happy. Also I haven't cut naps except yesterday bc nanny woke him after a 2.5hr nap.
He then went to Bed at 8:30 but slept at 9 pm and woke at 6:30 with 1 NW.

Yesterday:

WU 6:45 am
S 12:55-3:30 pm
BT 9 pm  ( resisted sleep for 30 minutes)

Days with longer naps end up really long. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
