Loss of appetite
« on: May 15, 2017, 21:59:48 pm »
Hi
For the last day or so my 6 wk old has lost his appetite. Usually he has 120ml every 3 hours. Lately he only takes about half that or at least 30 ml less. He seems well & not I'll? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi

Still having this issue. I am really trying to keep my LO tanked up during the day but really hard when he won't take much at his feeds.
Has any one else experienced this and have some advice?

Thanks so much.

Hi Kim .
Can you give a little bit more information, how is he in between feeds? Does he seem happy or hungry? How much does he weigh?
Growth spurts happen for the first time between six and eight weeks.
Here is a little bit more information about that

Hi Dache
Thanks so much for your reply. Generally he is ok between feeds. Is quite addicted to his paci. I spend a lot of time trying to get him to take naps as I'm still trying to figure out tired cues and awake times as well as how long his naps should be at this stage. After a feed he is pretty happy & smiley but after an hour or so gets jerky & fussy. I assume this means he is tired. Yesterday this is the feeding pattern
0100. 90ml
0430. 120ml
730. 70 ml (woke early 6ish & used pacifier)
1030. 120ml
1330. 100ml
1630. 100ml
1830. 50ml
2330. 50ml
Today
0300. 120ml
0630 120ml
1000. 50ml
I do have to encourage him to keep drinking sometimes.
I was also worried that he was going to make up feeds at night but last night it didn't seem quite the case. This has been the last couple of days. Previously he would take a full 120ml at most feeds & I was going to increase his bottles to 150. We are thinking of introducing a 10pm dream feed to see if that pushes him a bit further in the early hours so we only get one wake up.

Was this an increase compared to prior to that? Just wonder if he was taking ~100ml/bottle and then started draining the 120ml, you thought to increase but now he's dropped a bit again? If so, possibly you're just out the other side of a growth spurt...

He is mostly taking smaller amounts when he's going less time between bottles - do you think you could just not do the tanking up?

Have you tried a teat with larger holes? That might help this:
I do have to encourage him to keep drinking sometimes.

Thx Dache
He was taking 7-8 bottles of 120ml at 3 weeks. HV & I were concerned he was over eating as it lasted more than a few days. We Brought it down to 90 at each feed & he was fine with that. We then upped it back to 120 to see what he did. For about another week he was downing the full bottle up to around 2 days ago. As seen by my day routine above he only took 50 ml after a 5 hour break. Since yesterday afternoon he seems to have his appetite back but a bit snuffly so think he has a cold. He is on size one test but sometimes that seems to be a bit fast for him. Will get size 2 in preparation though. Do you think our plan to do DF at 10 is a good one to try only have one middle of the night wake up? We tried it as a new born & didn't seem to make a difference then but as you can see, he is able to go 6 hours overnight.

Thx so much for your replies. Much appreciated

Yes, DF is often worth a try again once they've a decent stretch - give it a week before you bail if it doesn't work straight away.

Well, a 6hr stretch ain't bad at this age. If 6:20 am was 11.5hr from when he fell asleep, that's a pretty reasonable night. The 12hr night isn't something that lasts forever though it often reappears around nap dropping times :)

His bedtime is 7. Last night though we only managed to get him to bed at 720 & he was only asleep at around 815
