4 month sleep regression!!!! Multiple night wakings
« on: May 11, 2017, 13:07:40 pm »
My son is 4 months old and had been a great night sleeper until a few weeks ago. He normally would go to bed around 7pm and wake once between 3-4am to feed. (EBF) but now he goes to bed still around 7pm but wakes up every 2-3 hours all night long! And when he wakes he isn't easy to get. Ack to sleep like he used to be. I've tried to be patient, but it's been a few weeks now, so I'm hoping someone has insight!! Here's his typical day:
Up for day 6:30am
E 6:30

S 8:15am-10am

Babies start sleeping in cycles around 4mo whereas they previously spent a lot of time in deep sleep. This is why babies often stop doing longer stretches at this age.

It could also be because he is having 3 long naps of 1hr15-45 which might be taking from night sleep. Normally at this age the last nap would just be a 45 minute cat nap. I'd also look at extending those first two A times to 2hrs or more so he isn't left with that long A time before bed.

If he's only having 5 BFs in the day he might be making up for it at night if he can't get all the calories he needs in those feeds. Are you feeding on one side until he comes off himself and then offering the second side at each feed? You could also consider squeezing in another feed in the day time to see if that helps. Or sometimes a burp and nappy change between breasts can mean they take more from the second side.

And how does he go to sleep for naps and BT? Independently? Any props like a dummy or you rocking etc.?

It is normal for an EBF baby this age to wake frequently for feeds so he may just start going longer by himself soon anyway.
