One nap - almost 11 months
« on: September 13, 2017, 06:42:25 am »
I am pretty sure my DD is ready for one nap.
Yesterday was our first day and it went like this:

WU 0720
A 5hr
S 1220-1350
A 6.5hr
BT Put down at 1950 but didn't sleep until 2020
NW 2200
NW 0545-0620 bf
WU 0805

So a few questions:

Will her nap get longer than 1.5hrs? I was hoping for 2hrs at least

The fact that she didn't fall asleep until 2020 at BT. Is that from being OT? Should I do it earlier? Anything before 1945/2000 is hard for me. We get home late. Should I be doing a 12 hour day or 13 hour? What if she won't do 12 hour nights?

The NW and BF is not every night. Sometimes she sleeps through and sometimes not. If she wakes I just BF but I don't think she wakes for it really. Because when she does wake she still takes a while to fall back to sleep after feeding. Last night the NW was 45 minutes which leads me to believe this is more a schedule issue? When we were on 2 naps she was waking most nights a long NW as well, sometimes 2! Mostly around 1-2. So the waking has been pushed later in the night. Don't know what that means...

Should I be doing set nap and BT? When she has a long NW she tends to sleep in the next day which ruins the whole schedule and makes BT even later... if I do a set nap and BT hen won't her nap be short or won't she fight the nap after waking so late?

Dont remember much since DS  :-\

My 11 month old is on one nap as well. She started showing signs at 9 months and it was a long transition to one nap. We still get some OT nights as she settles in.

My LO only does 10.5-11h nights, but I know a lot of babies will do 12 when on one nap.

Have you thought about waking your baby in the AM instead of letting her sleep longer? That way you can have a more consistent morning AT. And more if a "schedule".

My LO does 5.5h in am and 5-5.5h before bed, she has a 13h day

We did set nap and bedtime on one nap but let LO wake naturally in the morning.  I felt they kind of needed somewhere to catch up!  I found that if the catch up was really needed, then they would take the normal long nap anyway.  And if it was shorter when they woke late it didn't matter because they took as much sleep as they needed and then were fine to get through a bit longer afternoon as the morning A time was shorter.  Just a word of warning though - they can accumulate OT at this stage very very quickly and it may be you need to try hanging onto 2 naps when you can for now until LO can properly handle the one nap every day.  I would say your LO was almost certainly OT by bedtime with such long A times - if you can't do any earlier bedtime than 2000 then I think your one nap needs to be later in the day to prevent OT by bedtime.  Have you thought about trying a short am catnap to push the long nap later?

Hi jess,
Yes I think you are right and I might need to do a short catnap. The afternoon catnap was becoming impossible but I can't seem to time the morning catnap right. Maybe you could suggest something?

Hi lovely, so sorry I've been away for a bit.  How are things now?

We used to aim for a set nap around 11.30/45.  I found that if we headed out in the car somewhere between 9-9.30am (about 3-3.5h after WU) LO would fall asleep if tired enough (usually accumulated OT) and we would allow 15 mins and still go for the main nap at about the same time.  It wasn't perfect but worked ok.  You could try something similar - say heading for catnap around 10.30am?  Possibly allowing a bit longer, up to 30 mins, then main nap about 3h later?

It's a bit of trial and error really though!
