Tips on minimising hysterical crying before naps?
« on: September 18, 2017, 15:20:48 pm »
Hello everyone!
I'm new to the boards and been trying to follow easy for the last fortnight.

I do shush pat but end up having to rock and despite this, it can take twenty mins to get at to stop crying and evenings up to an hour.

Naps also don't last long and this cycle continues...

Any help would be appreciated!!

Sorry to hear about your troubles.
Do you wanna provide a bit of background (baby age etc.) And a sample of the routine you have been working with recently.

Thanks!

Baby is thirteen weeks.
I have been doing the four hour easy but struggling to keep her down for 1.5 hour naps and she starts crying after half an hour or so of activity.
Mornings are better. Afternoons and evenings are just constantly settling. And as each time she cannot sleep, she gets more agitated on awakening

She sleeps from her last last feed be it nine or ten til four or five am.  So she must be able to sleep it's just naps!!

This is the sample days I posted on the easy forum. Sorry for the quick posts. I'm typing in the short moments she has settled!!
Thank you @becj86

Here is a few sample days;

5.50 E
6.00 A
7.30 S

10.15 E
10.30 A
11.30 S

1.30 E
2.00 A
2.40 S

4.00 - 5.10 rocked to sleep

5.20 E
6.00 A
No sleep. Rocked or slept catnaps twenty mins

9.00 E
9.30 A
10.00 S

Another day;

5.00 E
5.30 A
6.00S

8.00 E
8.15 A
9.00 S

1.00 E
1.30 A
2.00 S
3.00 S crying. Settling in arms

4.15 E
5.00 A
6.00 s. Fighting sleep and crying to sleep.
6.30. s. Woke and crying even more
7.15. Screaming to sleep. Rubbing eyes. Burrowing into armpit.

7.15 E
7.30 A
8.00 S

Another day;

6.30 E
7.00 A
8.00 S

10.00 A. Morning bath
10.30 S
11-12 A. Class.
12-2.20 S. in pram. Outside

2.20 E
2.45 A
3.30 S
4.30 S settled back. Rocked.

5.30 E
6.00 A
7.00 no sleep. tried rocking. Crying. Five min naps maybe at a time

8.30 E
8.45 A
9.30 S

Some notes; I give her a morning bath normally at second feed. Evenings husband comes back around five or six.
I try to watch for cues and get her to settle to sleep when she yawns or rubs eyes. Evenings as husband is spending time with her, I miss the cues and settle her after she cries and husband has been trying unsuccessfully to settle her. The longer she goes without being settled, the harder it is.

Some days I have tried to change to a three hour EASY evenings as I feel she only likes small amounts of activity some days and then cannot sleep the remaining time.

Really hope you can be of help!! 🙏🙏

Today however she hasn't napped like any of the days. Each nap has been twenty mins and me soothing. A growth spurt? She's feeding less too...

If I am reading your sample days correctly....aside from today she has been taking two ~ 2h naps?

And you have been having more trouble with the next 2 naps?

Looks like 3rd is ~1h+ and 4th is complete struggle? Or is that BT?

A couple things on that...

First, the 4h easy routine accounts for 2 longer naps (1.5-2h) and one cat nap (40 mins) so if you are trying for a 4h easy routine you may be asking/expecting too much daytime sleep which could explain the fight in the evening...

What time is bed time I could not see??

Another note is that most babes can't fully handle a 4h routine until they are 4 months old, so there could be some push back there as well.

Hiya,
Thanks so much for replying!

Ohh very insightful re the two long naps. You are correct the third nap is forty mins to an hour and fourth non existent.

The sleep times are the last s of the day. I haven't managed a set sleep.

My question or query re reducing the easy time is that she easily can go four hours without a feed. How do I then change the easy timing?

You could delay feeds slightly after wake up to hit the 4h. Eventually her At will increase then you will be back to feeding directly after sleep.

As baby gets older and awake time gets even longer and solids are introduced you will see that even more
