Almost 20m old. Is that too early to drop a nap?
« on: October 08, 2017, 22:02:12 pm »
Hi ladies!
We had a perfect routine a couple of weeks ago, with some variations of course :
7am - wake up
12.30-2pm - nap
7.30 - bed time.
He still wakes up at night for a bottle 1 in 3-4 nights and I give him 1 scoop in 200ml, he does not take the whole one.

But 2 weeks ago something happened and bam! It took to put him to bed almost 2 hours and he goes to sleep at 9pm. Since then DS refuses to nap (at home only) or it's a real nightmare at bed time. He's just playing with his toys.
We were driving around so that he has at least 30-45 minutes nap time.
He goes happily for a nap in child care though but then I know what we will face later.
One day he did not have a nap and wasn't too cranky during the day and went to bed quickly and slept very well at 6pm or so.
I think generally he has low sleep needs but wasn't prepared for that.

Should I just wait and the sleep regression will pass? How long may it take? Or the time for 1-0 transition has come?
What can I do? His canines are disturbing him now as well and I medicate regularly.
Thank you!

Hi there it's so confusing when they change things up all of a sudden. Just so your not alone my DS2 is doing exactly the same thing at the moment and he's 20 months too, for us it's definitely a developmental phase with a good dose of canines thrown in.

I'd say it's a little young to drop the nap so I would move it a little later and make it a little shorter if it's affecting BT. I find my DS won't go down till at t least 1 at home and that's after a busy morning, also lots of stimulation and exercise is needed to make him tired enough but not shattered. At nursery it's 12.30 ish but he's been busy there.

There is a big language explosion at this age so lots of reading and practising new words can help. Hugs stay strong it will pass just try and manage OT in the meantime x

Oh, that's not bad.
My son went to bed yesterday at 8.15pm which is too late considering he had a capped nap in childcare from 12.50-1.30pm
And he woke up at 5.30am absolutely miserable of course  :-\
If he sleeps till 2.30pm like yours,  his bedtime will be around 9.30 I'm sure.
I'll try to give him more sleep, hoping he'll go to nap earlier at childcare today.
Do you know if we have any tips somewhere on the forum how to manage OT? I'm sure it has been asked hundreds of times.  Thank you!

Have you tried a super early BT incase he's not settling with OT build up?

Really you just need to either try and force a nap by methods like buggy or car ride or using early BT but some lo's of course don't comply.

If he's low sleep needs 45 mins to an hour maybe all he needs but I'd keep trying as if it's developmental it will pass x

thank you for the reply!

I've read some topics, yeah it's definitely SR. I should have read it before asking :)

Yesterday we arrived home later then usual and I managed to put him before 8pm right after a bottle (though gave him 2 bottles because he didn't have a proper dinner), feeding almost in darkness without any stimulation. Then put him in the cot and I was stroking his back until he showed me not to do it anymore.
We had an EW this morning again but he was much better than yesterday's morning.

Could be teeth making him extra tired too. Hope the days ok, try not to get into the early nap every day as that can create the EW x

Yes, I know the rule, thank you! :) Wanted him to catch up some missed sleep hours.
The day was good. Just put him to bed at 7.30pm (8,5h total activity time) without a peep. But again bed time bottle in darkness and no books.
BTW, he ate a lot today (for lunch 3 portions instead of one).

Just a quick update for anyone who has the same problem with their LO.
After 2.5 weeks DS started to sleep again during the day and night.
Now his first activity time became 6h so if he wakes up at 7am then nap time is rather 1pm. We're capping the nap to 1h (I'm asking the same in the childcare). And he doesn't want to go to bed earlier than 6.5h later (which gives us bedtime close to 8.30pm). So I guess we just have to accept it for now or to cap his naps to 45mins.
The good thing I started hearing him only after 4am if nothing is disturbing him, so he has started sleeping better.
