Starting work and moving from BF to Formula - How to?
« on: December 04, 2017, 11:03:02 am »
My LO just turned 3 months today and i return to work beg of January. We have been exclusively BF for the past few months but now I need to switch her to formula completely as my work schedule is a killer. We started last friday by replacing one feed (the 1pm one) with formula. I want to know how i should be doing this...do I replace one feed every few days, how do I avoid getting engorged, and how long will it take to replace all feeds and have her on formula completely. Are there certain feeds that are better for me to start with? HELP!!

Our feeding schedule is as follows:
7.00 am
10.00 am
1.00 pm
4.00 pm
6.30 pm
11.00 pm
4.00 am

Hi there!  Ideally, you would need to wait a few days between dropping each feed to keep you from getting engorged...4-5 days or so if you can, but you could probably feel that out as you go on.  I found with mine once we got to the point where we only had a few feeds left, my body didn’t produce much anymore but that’s not the case with everyone.  The feeds are up to you - LOs tend to be more attached to some feeds than others...or you might want to leave the night feeds for now just for convenience.  I don’t think there’s a “wrong” way to do it, just as long as you don’t go too fast.  Good luck!

As Erin says I'd definitely go as slowly as you can.  Not just because of encouragement but because formula is much harsher on LO's tummy than breast milk so her digestive system will need time to adjust.

Thank you ladies! Appreciate the replies :)
Dropping a feed every 5 days, and will see how it goes.
