Help! 11wk old using paci as prop? Short naps, night waking
« on: February 10, 2018, 07:23:56 am »
Established the easy routine and starting sleep ritual before he becomes over tired. Canít keep the paci in his mouth but he loves it. Not sure if this is still a prop? Still need it during the day though because he had tongue tie issues and still working on suck training with the bottle and paci. Wondering if needing to break the paci for sleep and how to do so, even though only 11 wks. Is it still possible to keep the pacifier throughout the day?

ultimate goal is independent sleep and paci causing issues.

Hello and welcome to BW forums :)

Pacis can become a prop and many people struggle with re-plugging through the night but you might choose to keep it.
There are benefits to paci use to consider - reduced risk of SIDS, plus of course you've also mentioned the need to use it in the day due to tongue tie.
Some people keep the paci use and just put up with any re-plug problem over night until LO is over 6 months before weaning it.
There are a lot of growth spurts in the early months too so don't forget sometimes he might be looking for a feed rather than the paci.

If you did decide to wean the paci Tracy describes a process of allowing LO to such during the faster harder stages of sucking and then to remove once the sucking reduces so that LO is not falling to sleep with it.

Thank you! We did abruptly wean for a few nights in weeks previously and tried to replace with shush pat which was too soon and to sudden and fear it broke the trust. Is there anything about regaining trust that would apply here?

If you were with your LO and comforting whilst with-holding paci use I wouldn't be too concerned about breaking your bond of trust.  Babies go through all sorts of hardships without breaking a bond with parents so long as they are comforted and not abandoned (eg with controlled crying or crying it out methods).  If you have resorted to those methods of CC or CIO though then a process of re-gaining LOs trust would be beneficial and I can link you to a FAQ on that and help you with any questions/support you need with it.

Assuming your only prop is the paci though it really is up to you to decide if you want to go ahead with weaning it or keep it for now.
I find this a tricky one because I can understand the problems with having to re-plug and how this can effect parents sleep etc but because of the SIDS guidance I never suggest dropping a paci if it is already in place. It is a very personal decision to make.
I didn't have to make that decision as my DS refused a paci so it was never as issue.
