9w old, stays up late until 11pm, PLEASE HELP!
« on: February 14, 2018, 08:26:30 am »
Hi everyone, Iam looking for some advices.
My baby is two month old and since he was born there were only 1 night that he slept good (yes I count). The rest of the time it takes him around 3-4hrs to settle for night sleep. We have tried everything, rock him, carry him, nursing all the time, put him on my tummy, put him in the stroller...

Our bed time routine are including bath, lights off then swaddle but since it takes ages for him to fall asleep after swaddling there will be a chaos whether we carry him with the swaddle on or take it out to put him in the stroller, baby carrier.

He is on EASY since 4weeks and I tried to make him nap shorter during the day, doesnít work, I tried to make his naps longer by carry him all day in the baby carrier doesnít work either. The older he gets the longer it takes him to fall asleep at night. Some nights he will take the last catnap and not continue sleeping, sometimes he doesnít even catnap. He normally closes his eyes for 2-5mins then wakes up. After 11pm he sleeps well.

Here is one of our day:
Wake: 7:30
Sleep: 8:30
Wake: 10:30
Sleep: 11:45
Wake: 12:45
Sleep: 14:25
Wake: 15:52
Sleep: 16:28
Wake: 17:00

17:30 bath and 6:15 prepare for night sleep. Eyes closed for 2 mins or 30 secs for a few times then stayed up until 11pm. Next day wake up at 7am.

PLEASE HELP!!!!
Thanks in advance and much appreciated!

Hello and welcome to BW forums :)

Sorry to see you didn't get any replies yet.

It's quite common for very young babies to heave restless evenings but I would agree that 11pm is too late for BT.

Looking at your nap times I am surprised you get such a good first nap after only 1hr A time but as it is a good nap I suggest leaving it for now.  The other A times though vary a bit and I wonder if you watched the clock a little (as well as looking for sleepy cues) you might be able to aim for a bit closer to the guidance A time on some of them, example in the evening he wakes from nap at 15.52 and goes back to sleep at 16.28 which is only 36 mins A time, if you could extend this A time closer to 1hr 20 (like you are for other A times) then perhaps you would get a better nap there, and BT could go more smoothly.  Otherwise he gets only a 30 min nap and his A time after this short nap is probably too long for him causing OT (it is about 1hr 15 which is appropriate for age but perhaps not appropriate after such a short nap).
I wonder too if you stretched that 11.45 nap just a touch later, 5-10 mins longer A before it, if you could get a longer nap there, more than 1hr so that again you can try to avoid the OT building up.

Are you feeding every 3hr in the day? and perhaps cluster feeding in the evening?

Wake: 7:30Sleep: 8:30Wake: 10:30
I would suggest that you might find he's tacking that good first nap onto his night and his night is running 11pm to 10:30am and he sees no need to go to bed for the night at 7:30/8pm...

I'd second creations' suggestion that you aim for more consistent A times of 1:15-1:20 as he's taking good naps with that A time and you'll probably get something a bit more consistent.

Hi Creations and Becj86,
Thanks for your reply. I could not go to this forum to write although I have read your feedback.
Yes I did watch the clock and tried to put him down earlier (normally 5-10mins before nap time so should be around 1h5mins at 9w and 1h15 mins now) but it took him 1hour to fall asleep which obviously creates OT. Since then instead of shuhh pat and put him down on his bed I tried everything to make him nap and as long as the naps are ok his nighttime is a bit better. However the good naps are over and we have serials catnap for the past week. He is 14w so should he be cutting down the last nap?
Im still feeding 3h during the day, sometimes 2.5 if itís too close to the nap.

Hi, at 14w, his A time is probably 1.5hr and ideally you would PD at 1:25 at the earliest, so you're not putting him down undertired and becoming OT by the time he falls asleep. If he's still catnapping on 1:30 A time, you can increase to 1:35 and see how he goes.

Hi, thank you for your reply. So I have a day like this I dont know if he is a bit OT at bedtime?
W: 5.45 or smt too early I cant remember then leave him in bed quiet but he did not go back to sleep
S: 7.05 (I put him down few mins earlier hopping he is connecting this nap to catch with the night and can consider this day is a 3naps day???)
W: 7:57
S: 9.37
W: 10.27
S: 12.10
W: 2.10 (with help to extend the nap when he woke up at 50mins mark)
S: 3:25
W: 4:15

Bt 6pm. Put down at 5.40 but didnít fall asleep easily. Wake up every 10 mins for the next 2 hours and then 2 more times after that until 9pm. During the time he woke up and cried I did rock him, carry him and feed him. Last feed at 9pm so no more DF, wake up at 2.30 in the morning for feed then 6am for another feed. Totally awake at 7.20 the next day.

Probably could call it that, however I'd probably have just counted 1.5hr from when he got up (rather than when he woke, because he was just lying in bed quietly) and done a nap then.

Bt 6pm. Put down at 5.40 but didnít fall asleep easily. Wake up every 10 mins for the next 2 hours and then 2 more times after that until 9pm.
Sounds like OT but could be overstimulation too.

Are you trying to extend all the naps when he wakes at 50min? He's doing that quite a bit, you could probably increase A time by 5-10mins and see if that helps.

Hi, thank you for the quick reply. I increased A time a bit to 1.40mins and got a bit longer nap this morning. Wake at 7.20 am then nap at 9am I got 1.10mins wake up the first time then extended. Intotal I got a 1.5h nap which not happening for a while yay!

My question is if all the naps are longer today and to avoid a late BT should I cut down the last catnap and do BT routine for him after nap no.3?

You should aim for about a 12hr day, so if you start the day at 7am, BT should be around 7pm. Yes, you can do a shorter nap if you need to, to keep BT around that hour.

So he waked at 4.35 for the last nap, done 55mins. Today we have 2  naps 1.5h and 1 nap 1h. If we have another nap at 6.15, wake him up at 6.45 for example then BT will be after 8. Or opt 2 BT at 6.45, which option do you recommend?
Thanks !!!

I'd go for 6:45 myself but I'm fine with an earlier morning than most.

Thanks. Thatís what I did actually, cant handle a late night anymore. So yesterday weíve got all the naps ok. However BT still wake up every 10 mins for the first 2 hours, I have no idea why. Could u please have a look?
W: 7:23
S: 8:57
W: 11.35 (wake up the first time at 11.05 then extended with my help)
S: 12.12
W:1.10 then extended after 25mins, slept for anpther 25mins
W: 1.50
S: 3.40 (A time 1h50mins probably a bit tired?)
W: 4.35
BT 6.10 (targeted but difficult to settle as usual)

So on this day his average A time is 1h40mins, as his nap on that day is still ok I kept the same A time for the rest of the nap. Today im going to reduce A time to 1h35mins to see if it makes a difference or not. We having this difficult BT since birth and we are very tired of it.

S: 8:57W: 11.35 (wake up the first time at 11.05 then extended with my help)
Why extend a 2hr nap?

S: 3.40 (A time 1h50mins probably a bit tired?)W: 4.35
An UT nap though, unless you woke him.

W: 11.35 (wake up the first time at 11.05 then extended with my help)S: 12.12W:1.10 then extended after 25mins, slept for anpther 25minsW: 1.50
UT nap here too, but able to be extended (I probably wouldn't have tried for 25mins... for my sanity).

I think you've had a few UT naps on those A times and maybe could increase a touch.

WRT BT: I think there are many things that could be an issue here. People coming home around this time can be overstimulating - just by their existence. Not saying they shouldn't come home but amping him up any for smiles and giggles when they get home isn't going to help. Really, he's not had a full 12hr day and just as LO's get OT with too long a day, sometimes they just won't settle with too short a day, so maybe try to aim for BT 12hr after he gets up for the day. You might find he settles a bit better then. Some people do baths and books at BT becuase there's a perception that they're good for children's routines or calming or something. For my DS and plenty others I know, books are overstimulating and should be done at some time other than BT (same for bath if that's exciting for LO). It could be normal old witching hour shenanigans too, but give some thought to the suggestions I've made before we decide you just have to ride it out, eh?
