7 week old........no deep sleep.
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:55:15 am »
Hi ladies,

I'm finding naps a huge issue.  My lo just doesn't seem to transition into deep sleep.   He could easily spend an hour in light sleep as in drowsy then eyes opening sometimes fully waking up sometimes just staying in light sleep.

I swaddle him.  Hold him in my arms a little for wind down.  Sometimes he will take Paci other times not.  This morning for example I placed him in drowsy,  he stayed calm for over 20 mins. I put light pressure on him if he jolts but doesn't always happen, then around 25_30 mins eyes pop wide open.  I left him little but it clearly began to escalate.  I picked him up, gently winded him (he is plagued by wind).  reswaddled and started process again.

Placed him back again at drowsy stage....10min later eyes open again...though this coincided with bottom wind.

Took him out again.  Left him in my arms eyes closed for about 20mins.   Decided to place him back in (I have two other kids to mind).  He has stayed quite but we are another 45 mins in and his eyes are still fluttering with lots of small grunts and body wriggles.  Now at nearly an hour and 40 mins of this process he is finally in deep sleep........

It's frustrating as often I cannot resettle. He then doesn't feed well and the cycle continues.   Is this normal?  Is removed sleep restorative.  I have spent an 1hr 50mins either resettling or being on standby to resettle.

I try and put him down when I see him yawning or staring.  It is possible hr is slightly ot.   he takes an age to feed,  then he is so windy and I think a little refluxy that I have to keep him upright and do lots of winding before I can start.  He takes neatly 40-45 mins to breastfeed.  Doesn't leave much time left.

Any ideas?  Is this normal???   I don't mind him being sling in pm early evening, but I kinda need a solid nap in cot so I can get some stuff done and spend some time with my other two.

When you read the routines in books ie. 2hr naps etc you end up feeling crap.  Yesterday we had a very restless light sleep with me pretty much present for first 45mins to complete nap failure rest of day with 20min, 30min naps for rest of day.

I am so puzzled. I
Thanks.

Edit deep sleep seemed to only last 10 mins.  Then fully awake.  ???

Hi, have a read of this information regarding sleep and cycles, etc. https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64515.0

I suspect part of the issue with your LO will be related to all the wind +/- reflux if symptoms are not well controlled.

It may help if you can write a day or two out in EAS format.

For what its worth, its a rare baby that sleeps 2hr naps consistently in a cot at this age. Most are doing some combination of short and long naps on mum, in a sling/carrier/rocker/pram, some in a cot.
