14 month old early waking
« on: March 04, 2018, 09:28:04 am »
Hi - we’ve had an early wake issue with our LO for about 5 months. Can’t seem to crack it. I’ve tried everything so hoping for some advice here. We dropped the morning nap a few weeks ago as she wasn’t settling and also shortening her lunch nap. Current schedule is:

5.15 - 5.30 awake
6.15 get her up depending on how loud she gets
6.30 milk in bed
7.45 breakfast
10.00 snack
11.00 lunch
11.45 put down for nap
12.00 nap until wakes up on her own which can be between 2 and 2.5 hours
2.30 wake up
3.00 snack
5.00 dinner
6.15 bath
6.45 210ml bottle milk
6.50 bed
7.00 asleep

We’ve tried shushing outside the door, rouse to sleep hasn’t worked as she just wakes up and starts yelling. She’s great at self settling. Not hungry as she eats really well.
Advice much appreciated..
Thanks

So this morning my LO was really restless from about 4.15am and eventually woke up at 5.10am. By 9am she was yawning so I put her down for a nap at 9.15, she was asleep by 9.23. She slept for 10 mins. I tried to put her down for her 12.30 nap and she resisted up until 13.20 when she fell asleep.

LO woke at 5.22 this morning, she was put down at 11.05 and asleep by 11.15 to 13.55. Bedtime arrived and she went down at 6.45, asleep by 6.50.
Fingers crossed for a good night.

If you get a good couple of nights you can start pushing the nap a bit later then hopefully WU will folllw, most LO need a 13 hour day on one long nap.

Up at 4.55 this morning. Left her for 30 mins then tried to resettle- failed. Do I continue with the long day nap? And early bedtime? Or are there daytime adjustments to make?
Plus any tips on what to do when she wakes at 5am? Bearing in mind if I leave her she can go for up to an hour before getting upset?! Thanks

Maybe you could do a short CN say 20 mins around 9.30 then nap at 12.45 and then get a later BT?

My DS1 was EW and we just had to go with EBT for a while but DS2 worked better with mini CN until a bit older x

Thanks Zoe. Each time I’ve tried to bring back the morning CN she won’t settle for her lunch nap and goes on until about 1.30 / 2pm before falling asleep. I feel bad, I wish I could help her sleep better.
She napped from 11.10 to 12.50 today and we struggled to settle her at 6.30pm tonight. Clearly overtired.

Will persevere with the 11am - 1pm naps and early bed for a few more days to see if she adjusts.

Any tips on how we try to settle her in the morning at 5am?

Hooray!! Success, up at 6.15am! Delighted, although I’ve been awake since 4.20 when she shouted out but went back to sleep. She did it a few times between 4.30 and 6.15 but made it!

Here she hoping we’ve broken the cycle. Thanks Zoe, your advice has been so much appreciated!

Oh dear, we've had a mad few days.  We had three days of waking after 6am and now we're back to 5am wakes.  Yesterday she woke at 5.05am and our nanny put her down at 11am for a nap.  She only napped 1.5 hours and when I got home and tried to put her down for an early night, we had a meltdown like I've never experienced before.  I felt so sad and sorry for her.  She woke early again this morning but we managed to settle her back to sleep until 6.05am.  Nanny put her down at 11.30 and she slept 1.5 hours.  Any idea on why she is all of a sudden shortening her lunch nap?  She's 14 1/2 months.

Maybe I dropped the morning nap too early.  She was resisting the lunch nap though.  And when we introduced the morning nap again she'd resist the lunch nap and we'd put her down at about 3pm!!

I don't have any advice - just words of support... I am in the same boat with my 13 month old.  He skips his afternoon nap for us if he has a morning one (around 1030).  At daycare she gets two naps in somehow but the last one ends by 2pm....We cannot get his schedule right.  Randomly he wakes at 615 on the very odd occasion and is super happy.  Most of the time he wakes between 515-545 and is very sad.  Although he perks up as soon as I let him leave his room - I try not to get him out before 6am.  We even had the clocks change at the weekend - this produced one sweet morning of a 630 wake up....back to 515am today :(.  Plus he was unsettled between 930-1130PM last night and hardly slept despite a good nap day.

I wish there was a magic answer!!!  My first was a dream compared to this!!  even when he skipped his naps he would sleep 12-13 hours a night - and still does at 3.5 years old!

You may just need to keep pushing that nap to 12 noon Ish, the earlier the nap often the earlier the WU.
We did keep our morning micro nap until about 20 months often I thought hed never nap at lunch but think key was not going too late and just doing it after lunch at 12/12.30 ish.

How was last night, sorry been busy x

Cbabyj have you started a thread of your own, often gets you the best response x

So on Wednesday our LO woke up at 5.15am and looked super tired at breakfast so hubby instructed nanny to give her a morning nap. She napped for 15 mins at 9am. Had a 2 hr lunch nap from 12.30 - 2.30 and asleep at 7pm. She went through to 6.30am!!  Pure bliss. So definitely dealing with Overtired. However, because she woke at 6.30 we put her down for a nap at 12pm. She slept from 12.15 - 1.50pm. So not quite 2 hours and she woke at 5.45 again this morning.

Do you think we should bring back the morning nap? Or persevere with the lunch nap at 12pm

I’d prob try having that morning CN for a bit longer, I wouldn’t do long nap then just maybe a short walk in buggy or drive somewhere to give 15 mins x
