HI,

We're having trouble with the night sleep.
I don't have a problem to put him to bed. He falls asleep by himself but wakes up after 45 min to 1h.
We've tried to let him cry a little but he gets very needy and anxious. He even cries when comforting him in ours arms.
They only way to calm him is to breastfeed him.
and we start allover again 1h later or so ...

We've tried to give him the pacifier, but it works one time out of ten.
We even tried to let him sleep with us but its the same.

any advice is more then welcome ...
Thank's

Hi, welcome to BW.

Sounds like something's not right for your LO. It could be lots of things, so I'll give you this to read about reasons babies wake in the night: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52878.0

This is a really common age for routine to be a part of why LO is waking - would you please write out your day in EAS format? eg.
7 - wake up, breastfeed
9 - nap
9:45 - he wakes, I try to resettle with shush/pat - doesn't work.
10 - breastfeed
etc...
please include night wakings, duration and what you're doing to resettle.

Any medical issues involved? Reflux, intolerances, eczema, etc. can all affect sleep.

We here at BW don't advocate letting LO cry if he's distressed/needing you - a mantra cry is different. Here's some information that may help as to why and how to tell the difference between various cries: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=19710.0; https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=141660.0

Has he always been like this or is this new? If new, when did it start and has anything changed just before it started?

Hi,
Thank's for your quick reply ;)
It started when he was 2 weeks old.
He add reflux, coliques, and was crying A LOT !!... so he was sleeping a little bit on me and in his bed.
After a while he was just sleeping with me and it was working fine.
but after a while, he stared to wake up every hour so we decided to put him in his crib.
when I put him down for his nap/night his really smilly and falls asleep pretty easily but it rarely last more then 1 hour ...
last night he woke up 20 times between 8h pm and 7h am ...
I try to keep a tight schedule but his nap are never the same ( between 30 min to 2h ) so I adjust. but always make sure he as 3 naps, 3 breastfeed and some play time ...
I will read the links you gave me and come back to you.

thank's again

I think the reflux could well be still bothering him - is he on any medications? Are you doing anything to reduce his symptoms?

Here is some info re: reflux and sleep - https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=65742.0

I also think he is not on a routine that is age-appropriate. His A times are all over the place and some of them are very short and some of them very long, so he's having UT 45min naps and OT NWs in the early hours of the night.

breastfeed :: 5h30he's up eyes wide open! so I tell him it time to sleep and I let him in his crib and he falls back asleep ... I think
This suggests to me that he is not typically awake long enough in the morning before his first nap.
I'd try to aim for something more like this (shift according to wakeup, eg. if he wakes 15min later, just shift the whole routine 15 later):
7 - WU, feed
9:15 - nap
10:45 - wake, feed
1pm - nap
2:30 - wake, feed
4:45 - nap
5:30 - wake, feed
7:30 - asleep in bed for the night

okay
I'll try shorter A time but the thing is a have a lot of milk so my E time is more like 5 or 10 min .... never 30 min.

And when he wakes up after 30 min in a nap, do I try to make him go back to sleep ?

Thanks

That's fine - plenty of babies feed in 5-10mins at this age.

I wonder if you've read about overactive letdown +/- oversupply causing reflux like symptoms? Here's some information: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=63604.0 I had oversupply and DS was miserable for a lot of the time and his naps were horrendous for the first few months until I got the feeding situation sorted out.

And when he wakes up after 30 min in a nap, do I try to make him go back to sleep ?
Ideally you would. If its an OT 30min nap, usually its reasonably easily resettled if you get there soon enough and resettle before LO is really worked up. I'd not suggest putting more than 10-15mins into the resettling effort though, for your sanity and to preserve LO's happy associations with wherever it is that he sleeps.

hi

I've been trying a tight routine for the pass few days and it's been better.
he goes to sleep at night and doesn't wake up until 11h so that's a good start  ;D
7h30 :WU
E . 8H
A . 8H10
S . 9H30 ... 10H
Y .
E . 10H30
A   10H40
E . SOLID 11H15
S . 12H45 ( IF I WALK ) ... 14H30
Y
E . 15H
A . 15H10
S . 16H50 ... 17H45
Y
E . 18H30
A . 18H35
E . JUST 2 OZ TO PUT HIM TO BED
S . 19H30 OR 20H

the naps are still very short.
When I go out for a stroller walk he sleeps very good but in his crib it's rarely more the 45 min.
I try to adjust but sometimes when he wakes at 9h45 in the morning it gives him a really long A until his afternoon nap !
any suggestion on how to make him nap longer ?

Thank's for all your tips ;)

So the idea of this is that its a routine - I'd suggest A time of 2:15-2:30 for your LO at this age and you can tweak after 3-4 days of keeping things consistent.

I think he's probably napping 45mins in the crib because he's UT, so maybe increase the A time a touch and see if that helps. He's making it through that 45min transition, and took a nap of 55min in the afternoon there, so we know he can make it through the transition if he's tired enough but he's still UT at the end of the day.

 Hello

So I tried the routine fo a while and the nights are much better. he is now waking only once per night ... big improvement  :D

but the naps are still a problem ... I can't make him sleep more then 30-45 min !
he will sometimes do 1h1/2 but it's really rare !
He is now almost 7 months so I am now doing only 2 naps. 10h am and 1h30 pm
If you have any ideas please share  ;D

have a great day
Fany

When is he waking for the day? His A time at this age should be around 3hr if not a touch more... Can you please post a couple of days in EAS format?

Glad he's sleeping better at night :)

Sounds like maybe the pacifier is a prop. If you're not wanting to go through the process of weaning it, babies can often learn to put their pacifier back in for themselves by this age, so a few around the cot and a bit of play time with the pacifier during A time so he can figure it out may mean he wakes but puts the paci back in himself and you don't have to get involved.
