Pacifier use for 6 w o
« on: June 24, 2018, 19:08:32 pm »
Hi all, I have a question about the pacifier use. We've introduced it too late to our older daughter and she never took it. Now, with my second daughter we started at 3 weeks. She sucks on it, falls asleep,  spits it up and cries for if in 2-3 min.  That's constant for 40 min.  No deep sleep during nap at all. If I constantly hold it in her mouth she might go a long time in that state.
My question is: what does the pacifier do in this age, 6 weeks old? Am I expecting too much? At least one solid nap would be great.  But nothing here since we introduced the pacifier. She was somewhat ok going to naps by herself before, but with pacifier it seems like we messed everything up.
Do you think we should try to take it away completely after 3 weeks of use? Will she be using breast as a pacifier?
Does pacifier prevents them from selfsoothing completely and later on they just can put it back at might by itself?
It looks like sh pat is overstimulating her more than putting her to sleep. I also try to catch her sleeping  ques before she gets OT.
Our routine is Sleep  Eat, Activity Sleep. She eats pretty much every 2,5 hrs during the day,  and 3,5 at night.   Can't post the timing as it is different every day. In the evening she doesn't nap or doesn't go to sleep  froom 7 until about 11 pm. We just keep replugging the pacifier or she is totally awake just chilling for 30-40 min.  Then again 'Pacifier game ' starts for another 2 hours.
Thank you from a sleep deprived mom,  who needs at least one nap during the day for herself too!!

Sorry, I have more questions.  Sleep deprived brain doesn't help to concentrate.
If I stop using the pacifier,  what do you recommend? Altogether or only during the nights?   If I start her on a strict wake up time  and bed time, what to do if she wakes before my  scheduled wake up time? Just start the day at 5 or 6 am?
Thank you for your help,  ladies !
Sorry,  but this pacifier issue really frustrated me as I thought it will be helpful but not in a way that completely doesn't help to prolong her naps.

Hi :)

IME, Pacifiers get spat out for a few reasons:
- shape - try a different shape teat
- not breast - keep trying if you want to use the paci for sucking
- not milk - if she's hungry and crying, try feeding her. 6 weeks is a classic age for a growth spurt...
- LO doesn't know what to do with it/its not effective for soothing - keep trying if you so desire, scrap it if you'd rather not carry on.

She may well just not be napping as well because she is waking up from that sleepy newborn phase. Could be that she's overtired or overstimulated.
Does pacifier prevents them from selfsoothing completely and later on they just can put it back at might by itself?
I look at this as LO using a tool to self-soothe but it is a prop if you're not prepared to replug.

I suspect if she's awake and chilling for 30-40mins after a feed, she's probably OT and needs a nap earlier given how little she is.

Thank  you so much!
Now, I try to limit it and not replugging it constantly. Letting her try to soothe herself without it.  She does it often just makes sounds and then falls asleep . Will see how it will continue! You are right OT  might be an issue. Will keep that in mind.
Thank you for your response!
