Pear and Apples Cooked or Not?
« on: May 30, 2005, 20:05:19 pm »
I have been making cooked pureed vegetables (carrots, peas, sweet potates and green beans) for my DS who is 5.5 mos old.  I wanted him to get used to the taste of vegetables before I went to the fruits.  I have given him a mashed banana and he likes it.  But now I am wondering do I have to cook pears and apples or just puree them?

Thanks a bunch!

I'm thinking the rule of thumb is cooked apples and pears until 8  months, then you can try them uncooked and peeled.  No peeling until 3 years (chicking hazard).

Here in Canada they usually say 6 months for raw fruits but only milld ones. That said, I steam them for about 8 minutes then throw the batch in the blender. Dd loves it. Especially cold when it's hot outside! So far we have only done pears, apples and mango.  The only raw fruits she's had are avacado (which is not a veg but actually a fruit) and banana.

Hope that's some help.

I have a baby cookbook that says raw pears and apples starting at 6 months, but the apples should be grated until they can handle chunks and the pears should be really ripe so they are easy to mush.  And btw, when you peel apples and pears you lose 2/3 of the nutriental vitamins.  My 2 1/2 year old has been eating apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, you name it with the peels since just after his first birthday with no problems.
