Baby Fruit Jelly

1 pint fruit juice
1 sachet of plain gelatine powder
2 tablespoons of sugar
4.5 ozs fresh fruit

Bring half the juice to boiling point. Remove from heat and stir in sugar and gelatine powder until all is dissolved. Mix with rest of juice and very finely chopped fruit (depending on age of baby). Place in refrigerator until set.

I tried this with my 8 month old and he loves it and, quite by accident, it has become a finger food (see posting on Solid Food forum). I used cranberry and mixed fruit juice by Ocean Spray with finely chopped strawberries but am going to try other combinations soon. This makes quite a lot of jelly and my husband has got some with ice-cream tonight in front of tv!

This recipie sounds awesome!

2 questions:
1.  Could I use sugar substitute as DH is diabetic and I am restricting ds's sugar?
2. How many cups are in a pint?

Thanks
Beth

What type of sugar sub are you thinking of using as i would like to limit sugar.  Have you researched effects/approval/etc for babies and toddlers?  I haven't yet, so just wondered if you had any knowledge to share

Thanks!

I talked to my doc about it, and she stated that limited amounts are fine.  DH uses a brand with aspertame in it, a "no name" brand common here in Canada called "President's Choice".

I was thinking too that if the juice were sweet enough, that the jelly may not need any sugar??

BTW, I haven't really fed DS any "sweet" things yet, other than his fruit.

HTH :D

I used caster sugar, known as Baker's sugar in the US.

As this recipe makes several servings, the amount of sugar baby would actually be having per serving is small. However, I do understand your concerns. I'm an "everything in moderation" philsopher and feel that it is potentially damaging to get too hung-up about not giving him this or that. Having said that, I'm lucky that, so far, my lo has not had any bad reactions to foods that I've given him and I realise that some babies can't have certain foods.

It probably would be ok to omit the sugar, but I'd choose a sweeter variety of juice (eg apple rather than cranberry). Let me know if you try it without sugar and how successful it was.

  :D
Thanks Helen!

Being Canadian, we use 1/2 of the metric system of the UK, 1/2 of the imperial system of the US, and I really don't remember either of them

I'm going to try the jelly's next week after I go grocery shopping, so I'll let you all know how they work without sugar.

 :D

i have this website for all types of measurement conversions bookmarked - and use it frequently:

http://www.convert-me.com/en/

good for mass, distance, and several other categories...

just enter the value you know, hit the 'convert' button, and it automatically converts it into every other measurement possible... just look for the one you want.

hope it helps!

It is my understanding that you should never give aspartame to children.  Can't remember why - but it definately stuck with me.  I would use the no sugar - fruit juice only.
