Sitting up - when ??
« on: June 13, 2005, 17:13:16 pm »
Hi there, my 7 mo is still unable to sit up unsupported, he can with support from me.

I was just wondering if anyone's lo's took a while as well as I am a little concerned.

He also doesn't move when on his front but lies there and gets frustrated if a toy is not near him.

Oh the joys ....

Thanks
Laura and wonderful Samuel (b. 11/19/2004)

Hi Laura, I wonder if maybe you don't want to rethink taking a poll on something that concerns you.

The only reason I say this, is because if the number goes in the wrong direction, it would likely cause you even more concern.

The one thing I have learned from this site, is to be careful about comparing and realize that each baby is different; and at the same time I have learned that where there is a legitimate concern and Mommy doubts, you should talk to your doctor and certainly not go by polls or references since again, every baby is different.

Talk to your doctor......that first step will help eliminate alot of your worries. After that, a poll to see when babies sit up won't botther you, but just in fact be a comparison for you.

Did any of that make sense? And in the meantime, {hugs}, welcome to worrying about all these milestones. I just realized I should have kept quiet about wanting mine to talk!

I agree that a poll for curiousity is okay, but probably not for a concern.  I wouldn't be too worried yet either although it never hurts to talk to your doctor about it just to reasure yourself.  My dd did most thing "on time" but it was always just overnight so don't be surprised if one day he just does it out of nowhere!

I voted and then I regretted it as I read your concerns. Everything happens at different times for different babies. My LO never really rolled properly.  He's only started moving on his front in the last ten days. My friend's LO took much longer to sit up but started crawling first by several weeks. I would hang on before you start to panic and talk to your doctor if you continue to be worried. I bet everything will be fine.

I wouldn't worry if I were you.  My ds did not roll over for the longest time and he did not have any sort of "problems".  If you are really conderned you could check with your doc but all babies do things in their own time.

i worried about my son at 5 and half months he could not even sit up unsoprated and i did contact the health vistor who told me to leave it a few weeks.    Then when he turned 6 months he started to sit up with pillows behind him and then a week later i removed the pillows and now he sits up great he can sit for about 30 mins before he falls over.

Hi,

Do you mean stay sitting when you put him down, or actually sit up from the floor without your support? I only ask because I can't remember when DS managed to stay upright witout support, but I'm prettey sure it was after 8 months. He couldn't actually get to sitting himself until he was crawling ( a week or two before his first birthday). Either way though you should not be concerned. Babies all develop at their own rates.

You said "He also doesn't move when on his front but lies there and gets frustrated if a toy is not near him. ". Well again Fraser did the same until well past 11 months! There are so many factors - big/small babies, how much time spent on their tummies, how used to having toys within reach they are and I'm sure loads of other things!

I should stress that there was/is nothing physically or developmentally wrong with DS - he is just doing things at his own pace and not really far behind in the grand scheme of things! Enjoy you LO for who they are now rather than worrying about the next stage which will come soon enough  :)

Sorry for waffling, and if you are still concerned after reading all the posts then talk to a health visitor/nurse/doctor who will put your mind at rest.

Hi there!
I was also wondering about this with my LO. He is now 6 months and still don't even roll. He is like trying but stops in the middle of the way. Also, he tries to sit by himself with a lot of effort (his face turns red) but can not and always cries for help. This has caused that he depends on me when he becomes frustrated as he can not sit by himself.
Actually, I think I will wait and see his developments. I can tell you that I believe that it is easier to let him develop when he feels sure of his movements, so he will know how he did it and repeat it, so I will be a little free also  :D
Bye!
Felipe

Laura - You're not the only one.  Dd is 8mos today, and she just started sitting up unassisted about a week ago.  And she's still pretty wobbly.

Frustration is a good thing!!! my DD has been'late' in a couple of milestones, i'm sure, cos she just couldn't be bothered!!!!!

DD sat up quite early, but has never rolled and barely played on tummy at all, she hated it. Was talking to my best friend tonight whose son is 7 mo and not really showing any sign of sitting up, he's quite happy as he is.

Ditto all the comments about chn doing things at different rates, but I do understand that you are interested. get your HV to have a look at him in action to see how she feels.

Now My Lo is 10 months and although he now rolls pretty well, he still can not sit by himself yet. I think that I will put him in this swimming stimulation that seems interesting so he can see other type of movements his body can do.
Now I am at the attention that he begins crawling but I don't know if it would be necessary that he first sit by himself.
What do you think?
