Anyone has bottle leaking problem?
« on: July 08, 2005, 00:19:45 am »
It doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it's really frustrating. I use the Avent 9oz bottles, but somehow they leak from under the screw-top after I tip the bottle upside down to feed ds   I tried tighten the screw-top as much as I can and changing the teats but sometimes they still leak and it is really messy when I'm feeding ds.

Anyone has the same problem? If so, how can you fix it? I really don't want to buy a new lot of bottles but looks like it's heading that way  :(

I remember this coming up once a long time ago...I think you need to put the nipple into the cap when it is still wet to take care of the problem.

Hi Rachelle, thanks for the reply.

I do take the teats out of the stem sterilizer with the inside of the teats still pretty wet and click them into place with the screw-top. But sometimes, one of the bottles will still leak while the others are fine  :(

Will try to make sure the outside of the teats are wet too and see if it'll help. I started to think it's just my bad luck  :?

Thanks for the advice.

It happened to us too for awhile and I always thought it was because the white cap was too tight.  I didn't know about the nipple thing.  Ours would leak from the under the screw cap so I don't think it was a nipple problem.  Now I just tighten it all the way then loosen it a bit then tighten again and it doesn't leak.  Hope this made sense.....

Hmm, hadn't tried that. I also have had AWFUL leaks with some of the Avent tops where it screws onto the bottle. Went out and got a different kind to avoid it but Natalie's not really into them while she did accept the Avent - it was just that I didn't want to be cleaning up milk! :x

Maybe I'll have to give it one more go......

BTW, back when I used Avent bottles w/Josie I had leaks with whatever sizes and started marking the leaky lids to see if they did it again and sure enough, many times they did! :(

I too remember this coming up awhile ago.  I think it was said to put them together wet and to not tighten the bottle too much.  Something about how the nipple and the skirt of the nipple are made makes them leak under the ring or out the sides of the nipple depending on which thing you didn't do.  Fortunately we didn't have much trouble with ours, but I know lots of other people did.  I couldn't find the post but hopefully others will post and let you know what worked for them.

I remember posting about this a looooong time ago. The advice I got from all the gals here (and the folks I complained to at Avent) was that the bottles needed to be put together wet. When you put the nipple in the ring...has to be wet. When you screw on the ring...the threads have to be wet. Then if you shake the bottle and it still leaks, you have to adjust the ring, either loosen or tighten it a teeny bit. Total PITA. It helped to have the bottles ready before I needed them, so I got into the habit of making the next day's bottles the night before. HTH!

Hi.  I had that problem also with Avent.  Like the others said, I found out that I when I tighted too tight, bottles would leak.  Tightening a bit more loosely solved the problem...   :)

This is what the avent website says about leaking bottles:

Why does my AVENT Feeding Bottle sometimes leak?

Leaking from underneath the locking ring of the AVENT Bottle most often occurs when the 'skirt' in the base of the AVENT teat is not in the correct position. Try the following steps:

a) Pull the teat through the locking ring until it clicks into place. Then put the dome cap firmly on to the locking ring. Screw the assembled top section onto the bottle.

b) Check that the top section has not been over-tightened. This can distort or trap the anti-colic skirt which will not allow the proper operation of the one-way valve.

c)Wet the base of the teat before pulling the teat through the locking ring. This will ensure that the skirt will slip easily into place inside the neck of the bottle and form a seal.

d) Ensure formula powder is not present on the inside top of the bottle.

e) Avoid over tightening, of the top section, screw cap, teat & dome cover onto the bottle base

My dd never got on with avent teats so I used tomme tippee wide necked teats on the avent bottles. They fitted with no problems and my dd got on much better with them.

Hi,
Avent bottles drive me NUTS for this reason! I think its a major design flaw. Who has time to follow all their instructions with a wailing baby?!  Anyway, I have found that if you twist the top the OPPOSITE way (as if to loosen it) FIRST, it usually works.  I twist it three times the opposite way and then three times the correct way. Its not failproof, but it usually works.
Good luck! I really think Avent owes us a better explanation and a better product.

I also noticed that if I didn't readjust the cap after I had warmed it a bit, it would leak.  I think  a change in the temp caused it to need readusting.  It's a lot of steps to remember... a hassle we really don't need.  Not to mention that it gets harder and harder for dd to get the milk out unless I pull the nipple out and let air back into the bottle several times during feeding.  We used to use the Avent disposables, but they are way too fast!  Next time around: No Avent!

Try loosening the bottles. Sounds daft but if its too tight there's no air getting in and it will be really hard work for your baby to drink. I shake the bottle, lossen it completely and re-tighten so that its closed but not screwed tight. Hope this helps

We also had this problem and figured it only happened when we over-tightened the skirt thing.

we found this out after about 5 days of the bottles leaking allover our poor little newborns clothes ! thinking the skirt wasn't on tight enough, we were tightening it up more - therefore leaking more !

We had this problem too  :(
In the end we just gave up and bought Tommee Tippee bottles and I have to say that they're better designed and leak free!
