What do you think about Fenugreek?
« on: July 25, 2005, 10:27:22 am »
Hello all,

What are your experiences of Fenugreek? My milk supply has never been very good (baby was slow to put on weight at the beginning because of this). I really want to keep on with the bf b/c we've been through hell to get this far I don't want to give up now!

I've done lots of work on my diet & I drink so much water I'm never off the loo! What else can I do? Would love to know if anything's worked for anyone else.

Caroline

Hi,

I started Fenugreek around the time when DS was 2 months old until maybe 4 months. It seemed to work, but then it's hard to say if it was just from the fenugreek.....could have been that I was more relaxed, finding more time to eat and drink and getting used to the stress of motherhood  and therefore my milk really started to come in. At the time, I thought it was the Fenugreek, but who knows. So yes, it did 'work' for me.

Some cons.....your perspiration, urine and bodily fluids will most likely smell like maple syrup (too much info? ). You also have to take A LOT of capsules each day.

My Doctor was concerned about Fenugreek as it is a herbal supplement and therefore isn't tested and regulated like perscription drugs are by drug companies. Because he didn't know much about it he advised me against it. However, the Lactation Consultant recommended it to me.

Here's some info from a really good breastfeeding website....

hello,
i had a low milk supply when i went to australia... must have been the heat... my LO was 4-6 months old.

i used fenugreek daily, at first i had to take more than recommended but then went down back to 2 capsules a day.

it took about 4-5 days for it to noticebaly work, but boy it worked! i even got engorged a couple of times, so reduced the dosage a bit.

the big bonus is that fenugreek moves your body fat and converts it into milk, so i lots heaps of weight too!

still take it now for the weight loss bonues, and the reassurance that i will always have milk for iggy.

I have used it for low supply when ds was around 6 months, and it really did work well for me.  It was recommended by my pediatrician, so I felt it was safe.  I think I used it for a couple weeks, and it definitely helped increase my supply.  For the last poster, try a health food store, they tend to carry it.  You could also try Mother's Milk tea, same ingredient.

I found that fenugreek really helped me whenever I was feeling like my supply was a little low.  And I never had to take that much to get the boost I was looking for--a couple capsules twice a day was usually enough.

Hi

I've not tried fenugreek on it's own but there's a breastfeeding support tea you can buy from borndirect.com that has fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle and raspberry leaf in it. Seemed to help with my supply, my little one took ages to put on any weight but now is 7 months and we're still breastfeeding withiut too much trouble.

I have had so many problems with my supply.  I am on Reglan right now to try to get my supply back up.  The thing that worked best for me, besides the prescription, was More Milk Plus by Motherlove.  It has fenugreek in it but worked way better then the pills for me.
If you really have lots of trouble and can't get it up try to go see your doctor.  I don't know where you are from but England has another option than the US.  I am in the US and the only option is Reglan.  It works great for me without any side effects but can cause depression in some people.  It has worked miracles for me and I no longer have to supplement with formula.

You can buy Fenugreek at GNC also.

I recently read that Fenugreek is one of the ingredients in curry, and that in some countries women take Fenugreek the entire time they are nursing and that it increases flow rate as well as increasing supply. :)

Thanks everyone!

I started taking it yesterday - will let you know how I get on. (The clincher was that it can help lose weight   :) )

Charlie's Mummy, or any other Brits taking Fenugreek - where did you get it from and is it pricey?? I have an adequate supply for my baby, but if this helps AND shifts the weight - well i'm gonna get me some!!

I got mine from Holland & Barratt the healthfood shop (you can get it on their website too - I think P&P is £1.99). It's not cheap £7.95 for 100 capsules (but you take 6 a day :o ).

I think it's starting to work, but I've only taken them for 1.5 days, so it might be wishful thinking!

I'd give them a go - they do you or baby no harm, and could make the difference.

Wow, I took some over the weekend for the first time--what a difference!!!  Lots of things had affected my supply lately (being stressed at work, not sleeping enough, Trenton had a nursing strike, etc.), and this seems to have me back on track.   :D  :D  :D

How long do you usually take it?  Just a few days--and then on an as-needed basis?
