how to wean her from the bottle?
« on: July 25, 2005, 16:26:20 pm »
Hi everyone,
My dd is 1 year and I am trying to figure out how to start her on weaning from a bottle.  She will still do about 26 oz a day with a bottle first thing in the morning and last thing at night and one during the day.  The dr has said that we don't need to be rid of it until 15 months but I wanted to see what has worked for others
Thanks
Alisha

Tyler was on 4 bottles per day at his 1 yr checkup. After that, I just started dropping them gradually. First the lunch one, then the mid afternoon one, then breakfast, then bedtime. We waited a week or so in between each bottle we dropped so that his body could adjust to making up for the lost calories with solids. We also started offering a sippy of milk at his meals and snacktime. The only one that was even a little difficult was the bedtime bottle, and even that was only a couple of nights of whimpering. HTH!

How is the weaning going?  We are getting ready to start weaning.  I am going to start by dropping a bottle tomorrow.  Wish us luck.

The Nuby cups that are shaped like sippy cups, but the spout is latex are a great transition helper if you need them.  They help kids learn how to drink from a sippy with still having a silicone nipple.  While my dd was getting her milk from those at mealtimes (dropped bottles altogether for the Nuby cups), she was getting her water the rest of the day and at snacks with a regular sippy.  Once we knew she was doing well with the regular one, we switched the milk to it as well.  She never complained!  Granted the bedtime bottle is the hardest to give up, but we just did it cold turkey with the rest of our night-time routine the same and like above, she just took a bit longer to fall asleep those nights (independently) and then never looked back).  Good luck!
