Silly Question, But Still Wondering...
« on: July 27, 2005, 03:44:27 am »
This may seem a bit paranoid, but since my kiddo is a bottle refuser, it is something I have been wondering about:

When you make a bottle with, for example, six ounces of water and three scoops of formula, it ends up making close to seven ounces.  So if my baby drinks the whole thing, do you count that as six or seven ounces?

Just curious since it makes a difference in what I consider his daily total.

You only have 6 ounces of water, the formula is heavier than water and causes displacement of the liquid,so you still only have 6 ounces of "liquid" after everything dissolves.  How does that sound? :)

BJ's right. You count it from the amount of water you have.

I talked to my doc about this too, as well as a good friend of mine, and they both told me that you count the total.  For example, I make a 6oz bottle, but with the formula in it, there is 7 oz of stuff in the bottle.  Yes, there is only 6 oz of water in it, but even milk isn't only water, it has other stuff that displaces the water.

ALSO, if you were to make up a big batch of formula in a juice container for the day, you would fill the bottle up to the 6 oz line and think nothing of it, right?  It's just with making it fresh you see the difference and realize that there is one.

So, for this reason, I just use the larger amount and don't worry about it.

I'm going to agree with Beth.  If you have 6 oz of breastmilk, you don't take the solids and fats out to count the intake do you? You count the total solids and liguids.

I was also told by my pediatrician to count from the total amount after it's mixed.  I was always wondering the same thing because one or two ounces was such a big deal then.

I was wondering the same thing.  It makes sense to include the total amount (formula and milk).

Good to know!  Thanks, ladies!

In the U.S. at least, one scoop of formula per 2 ounces of water is what the manufacturer's say is the appropriate amount.

The formula I use is the same.  1 scoop to every 2 oz of water.  You need to read the lable of the formula you use and make it exactly as they say.  Too much, and the baby gets too much nutrients, too little, and well you get the picture.

I almost posted the same question.  DH and I have been counting it as seven ounces and his carer says that too.

As far as the scoops go.  We've tried both kinds and the American formula brands have bigger scoops.  It's a little bit harder during the in between stages because it's hard to use a half scoop, but he likes Good Start the best.

I'm so glad I found this thread.  I've been wondering the same thing.  And, yes, in the US, the formulas are mixed with one scoop to 2 oz of water.
I'm glad to know that this is normal "formula behavior."

Clair,

I think it's beautiful.  When we first moved here we were driving up from the airport in Leeds and I kept thanking my hubby for bringing me here.  The countryside seems like it's right out of a painting.
