Refuses Baby Cereal - Breakfast Big Problem
« on: July 27, 2005, 15:27:29 pm »
My 9.5 month old dd refuses to eat infant cereal and always has pretty much despite me mixing it with pureed fruit

Breakfasts are a big problem as she does not want much at all. I dont fill her with her bottle (or sip cup of milk as I am now trying) but give her a little then try her with all kinds of stuff

she much prefers finger food despite having no teeth so I give her cheerios but she seems to eat about 10 or so and then plays with the rest (or should I say throws them around the room..lol)

I cook all my own baby food and use the chop facility on my blender rather than puree now but it seems that all she wants is pick-up stuff

any suggestions? Thanks

Some babies never really like cereal - or breakfast for that matter!  I'd be inclined to just go with the flow - if she likes finger food, she can have small pieces of toast, etc.  My dd started liking the cereal MUCH better once I started mixing chunks of ripe banana into it.  I also still give cereal at supper time to make sure she's getting enough of the iron enriched stuff.  And when I do the cereal, I distract her with toys, or alternate some chunks of fruit with a mouthful of cereal.  That's all I can think of right now considering I'm in a similar boat!

You could also try some scrambled egg yolks (no whites until 1 year of age) as finger foods or make a yolk omlette and cut it into chunks. My DS likes toast bites (as we call them) - spread with applesauce or other fruit.

I was wondering about this myself as dd has decided she too hates cereal. I've tried it a variety of ways but... she is definitely in a finger food only place so I can get her to eat (though she would live on cheerios alone if given the chance!  )

I'm wondering though if it's okay for them to be off cereal as aren't they supposed to eat it for the first year or so for the nutrition?

If your baby is formula fed, it isn't as big of a deal if they don't eat cereal because they'll be getting iron from the formula. It can be an issue for ebf babies...many peds prescribe iron supplements because breastmilk doesn't contain sufficient iron. Your ped can test your baby's iron levels with a blood test if you're concerned. HTH!

Thanks Melissa, that definitely helps! Dd is ff fed so I guess I won't worry so much about the cereal and just make sure she's eating a balance of other foods. It's actually been causing me quite a bit of stress so thanks!!!  :D

Oh and one way I do try and get the cereal into her is to roll pieces of fruit in the dry cereal before I give it to her. It also helps with the "traction."

My mum once said to me to not worry too mouch about giving DD 'breakfast' as such as we would have it, it's just society that demands we have certain things for breakfast, lunch and dinnrer and never the twain may meet. If they don't want breakfast, then how about just giving them savoury food. May seem gross to us and make aour stomachs turn at that time of day, but if she'll eat it.?!

Think about all the diff types of food people eat aroumnd the world for breakfast. US/Canada eat waffles and pancakes, we wouldn't dream of having them for brekkie, they're a desert here, in France they eat cereal poured into cups of hot chocolate - wierd and vrey soggy! In germany and the like they have cheese and sausages with bread for breakfast.

Think of it as educating your LO into the wierd and wonderful diverse world we live in!! :D

I never knew that about food habits in other countries!  Really interesting!  Well, and I've been known to have cold pizza for breakfast, so go figure...
