CHICAGO -- A new state law will allow nursing mothers to be automatically exempt from jury duty if they request it.

Previously, judges could excuse jurors on a case-by-case basis, but there was no automatic exemption for women who needed to breast feed their children.

The legislation signed Monday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich guarantees that nursing mothers will be excused.

The governor said jury duty is an important part of being a citizen. But Blagojevich said women and their children must come first, and the new law is designed to ensure that.

The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2006.

wendy I recon you could get off just for having triplets!
In Australia if you are the primary carer of minors (under 18) you can be excluded automatically! Wish I had been a mum when I had to do Jury duty over my 22nd Birthday!!
