what is your toddler's eating schedule?
« on: August 03, 2005, 09:20:30 am »
Khyan (15mths) has always been a picky & small eater with at least 5 hours between meals.

Well recently he has decided that he wants more to eat and more frequently and well I must not be on the ball because quite often I don't realise that he is hungry until he is wheeling out the high chair

So I thought as I'm not used to a hungry child maybe you could tell me what your meal schedules are for your toddlers, including snacks (and what types of snacks) plus bottles.

Thanks
Michaela

what is your toddler's eating schedule?

My DS is just under 18 months. His mealtimes are like this:

Sippy cup of milk (about 8oz) at about 7am

Breakfast (7.30 / 8ish) - a bowl of cereal consisting of one weetabix and a handful of cheerios. Sometimes he also gets a slice of toast - depends how hungrily he eats the cereal. I used to always put fruit in the cereal but it got flung out repeatedly so I've given up on that for the moment. On weekends I sometimes make him french toast (eggy bread) or scrambled egg and toast.

Snack (10ish) - this isn't a hard and fast thing. He gets a snack at nursery round about this time - anything from raisins and a cookie to pieces of fruit and breadsticks. At home he tends to get less - either just a baby biscuit, raisins, a dried apricot or two, a kiddie cereal bar or organic kiddie crisps (this depends on whether we're out and about and how much placating he needs)

Lunch (12pm) - this is  his main meal of the day and is usually something like pasta and bolognaise sauce with peas; tuna pasta bake with some veg, beef or chicken casserole etc. It is always a protein, carb and veg. Depending on how hungry he seems, I sometimes offer him dessert which is usually either a yogurt or a tub of blended fruit.

Snack (3ish) - if he didn't have a snack in the morning or he didn't eat well at lunch, I occasionally give him a small snack along the same lines that I outlined for the morning snack. I also make my own ice lollies (blitz strawberries, plain yogurt and honey and freeze - they are yum!) and if it's hot, we sometimes share one of those in the afternoon or I make fruit smoothies and he has some of that

Supper (5.30/6ish) - this moves about a bit depending on the day he's had. He also tends to have supper at 4.30pm when he's at nursery in which case I give him a small snack when he gets home - like a toasted crumpet or something just to check that he's not hungry. Sometimes he's completely not interested, sometimes he wolfs it down and wants more. I guess it depends on how much he ate at nursery. Supper at home is usually a lighter meal and could be vegetable soup with bread for dunking, or a pancake filled with some of my frozen cubes like ratatouille, or cheese and veg fritata or just cheese and tomato toasted sandwiches.

Bottle (about 8oz) at about 6.45 just before bedtime.

I also give him LOADS of water during the day. I'm a meanie and have never given him juice - he just gets plain water.

Hope that helps.

Good thread...I always like seeing others schedules :)

6:30 wake and sippy cup of milk

8 a.m. breakfast - either 1/2 waffle and some eggs or some yogurt and fruit..sometimes french toast, sometimes pancakes, but usually the gist is the same.....

10 a.m. snack...usually simple ... raisins, Gerber snacks, wheat thins, fruit etc.

12 p.m. lunch - sometimes Gerber meal, grilled cheese, mac n' cheese, chicken patty, etc. always served with veggies

3 p.m. snack ... something simple like the morning snack

5:30 p.m. dinner ... whatever I make...always tons of veggies also

7:00 p.m. milk and depending how she ate dinner, a little snack

My schedule is similar to those above without the milk offered first (she has it with breakfast) and without the bottle at night (dinner is her last food).  So sounds like most toddlers get the 3 meals plus 2 snacks.  This has been our schedule since she dropped bottles at 12 months.  Our times are roughly 8 (or a little bit after dd wakes up whenever that is), snack at 10 or 10:30, lunch at noon, snack when she wakes from nap between 3 and 4, dinner at 6:30.  HTH

Our routine is similar, but Tyler hasn't been into snacks as much lately. Some days we skip them and have lunch or dinner a little earlier, it just depends.
8 - wake, infant cereal mixed with juice and veggie puree, water (no milk)
10 - snack (crackers and cheese or PB, milk)
12 - lunch (yogurt mixed with wheat germ, cooked broccoli or peas, sometimes a PB sandwich, milk)
3:30 (or after nap) - snack (usually cut up fruit, milk)
6:30 - dinner (whatever we're eating, like chicken, pasta, veggie, milk)

That's it...we'll let him have his milk sippy after dinner if he wants it.

This is very helpful for me too.  I'm just wondering when all your lo's nap?  Mine is currently napping between 11/11:30am to about 1:30 pm, which makes for a very late lunch (2ish).

My dd actually naps fairly late.  She used to go down between 12:30 and 1, but then went through a phase where if I put her down around 1 or sooner, she'd wake after an hour crying.  But if I waited until 1:15 or 1:30, then she slept through for 2 hours.  So, that's usually when she goes down now and sleeps for 2 - 2 1/2 hrs.

Our schedule is like most of the posts already here:

Kyra wakes 8-8:30
Breakfast by 9:00 (Cereal and fruit or waffles and fruit plus milk to drink)
Morning snack between 10 and 10:30 depending on when breakfast was (yogurt plus juice/water to drink... I dilute juice more than 50%).
Lunch between 12 and 12:30 (Varies... veggies, fruit, cheese, maybe grilled cheese sandwich or mac and cheese plus milk to drink).
Down for nap between 1 and 1:30, sleeps 1.5 to 2hrs
Afternoon snack around 3:30 or 4:00 (usually fruit and crackers plus milk)
Dinner 6:30 (what we are having... usually a couple of veggies and some kind of "main dish" plus milk)
Bed time.. she gets a sippy cup of milk. I only offer a snack if she ate nothing (I mean nothing... like two bites) for dinner and only unsweetened cereal or crackers.
In bed by 8:30

Our schedule seems similar to others as well (dd nearly 18m):

7am wake up
7.15am ish breakfast - two Weetbix with mashed up tinned fruit and milk; half a cup of milk to drink (80-100ml) and sometimes some toast with Marmite.  A short while later has bf (but really not drinking much these days with my diminished supply!)

10am snack - crackers, sometimes with hummous or 'muesli bar' or pikelet or rest of uneaten breakfast toast... etc (with water to drink)

11.45am lunch - usually some fruit with bread/toast with topping eg. ham/peanut butter etc; cup of milk (150ml ish)

3pm snack - often a banana (with water)

6pm dinner - usually meat and veges and carb like pasta (not that she ever eats the veg!) with another cup of milk (150ml ish).  That's the last food/drink for the day, and she's in bed by 7pm.

Dd also only ever has water/milk to drink.

I put her down for her nap at 12.30pm, but like Stacie said, my dd often wakes after less than an hour crying... may have to try it a bit later...

Snacks can also sometimes be some raisins/cheese/other fruit or something 'bad' that I'm eating, like bits of cake etc!

Our meal schedule
« Reply #9 on: August 04, 2005, 10:31:19 am »
We actually don't do a lot of snacks, but we do long meals. Luka is a big eater and loves to sit in her high chair for long periods of time eating.  She will sit there for up to an hour while I wait on her hand and foot.  The only thing that upsets her is if I don't serve the food fast enough!

Eventually she throws her milk down and then I know it's over.

Wake up--I try to give her a drink of juice or water in case she's gotten dehydrated at night.

Breakfast--milk, juice, Cheerios, eggs, sausage, fruit, yogurt or cottage cheese, turkey and whatever vegetable I can prepare fastest--usually peas or beets.  Yes, she eats ALL of these things in one meal.

Nap--10 am--she will sleep until 11 or until 2, she is going back and forth between two short naps and one long one.

Wake-up--juice or water again.  I try to get her to play awhile before her next meal.

Lunch, noon or 1 pm--turkey, cheese, bread or tortilla, milk, juice, pretzels, fruit, cous cous, lentils....a lot of times I am throwing soda crackers or pretzels at her to buy time as she finishes food so quickly that I can't keep up.  It is typical for her to eat ALL of this stuff in one meal.

She plays until about 2 pm or 3 pm, then another nap.  I take this opportunity to go to the store or pick up the mail.

2-3 or 3-4--nap

Dinner, 4 or 5 pm--trying to feed her a variation of what I'm eating, so she could have chicken and broccoli, or pizza, or chili, or fish, or corn on the cob (minus the cob) or even turkey dogs (chopped up).  In addition, some fruit, and extra veggies, and maybe some soda or graham crackers, pretzels and some baby oatmeal. I try to get fortified baby oatmeal in once a day.

After dinner, I might give her a cookie or a graham cracker.  I do toss pretzels and graham crackers and cookies at her throughout the day (a bad habit).  I honestly don't know where she puts it all because she only weights 18 lbs.  I don't think her eating habits are typical at all--a lot of people have told me she is very atypical and eats a lot more food and types of food than most children her age.  I think some days she eats more than I do!
