when did you get rid of bottle before bed and how?
« on: August 04, 2005, 01:54:18 am »
At what age did you stop that bottle before bed? and how did you do that transition?

Did you replace it by sippy cup of milk with dinner/after dinner or possibly a snack? and if a snack when did you give it?

Thanks
Michaela

I bit the bullet and ditched the last bottle when Tyler was 15 mo. It was a total accident, we were visiting my parents, and I forgot to pack a bottle and didn't realize it until bedtime. That was that. There was a little bit of whining and crying the first night, but I was able to distract him while we were rocking by singing. Second night, a little less whining. Third night, he didn't even notice. Gone for good.

Tyler had been getting a sippy of milk during/after dinner since 1 yr, so that's helped fill him up. I really thought there would be a lot more drama, and I was convinced he'd wake up during the night starving, but he surprised me. My way probably isn't the best plan, but my point is that it could go pretty easily since Khyan is still pretty young.

alex was almost 22 months and i tried to get her to take the milk in a cup (even bought a "special" one) and no deal - she will ask for milk but will take 2 sips and leave it.  i have started making sure she gets some yogurt or cheese regularly but i know her calcium intake is now probably too low for her age.

we had a few nights of getting upset because i said no bottle but we just distracted with extra stories and now it is a distant memory.  it was funny though because it was the only bottle she had and io thought it was no big deal but i guiess it had been part of her bedtime routine for too long...

We ditched all bottles cold turkey at 12 months.  I did replace the bedtime bottle with snack that he had before bath though.  We started with cereal.

We dropped the bedtime bottle cold turkey at 11 months and didn't replace it with anything.  She was having dinner at 6, bath at 6:45 and bed at 7:30 (if I remember correctly) so she shouldn't have been too hungry by bedtime.  She actually went through a phase of refusing that bottle at about 9 months and we fought her on it thinking she wouldn't sleep well without it.  She started taking it again and then we stopped about a month later, although I was still worried she wouldn't sleep through.  We did her routine all the same, except skipping the bottle.  We had inserted a story after bottle a few months earlier so she wasn't used to the bottle being the last part of the routine or falling asleep using it.  I think that helped a lot.  She played in her crib a bit longer than usual that first night before falling asleep, but then went to sleep and slept right through.  Haven't looked back since.  Good luck!

Hi,
Our 15 month old DD is still having a drink of milk before bed (in a beaker, rather than a bottle). She has between 5 and 7 oz....
Like you, I'm a bit confused as to when they phase this out (she LOVES her milk and shows no signs of wanting to give it up...which is fine...)

No more bottle before bed

I took Pia's bottle away at around 15 mo's and simply replaced it with a sippy cup.  I had no problems at all, she took to the cup immediately, no hassles.  I gave her cup of warm milk before bedtime and omitted night-time feedings completely.  She slept through the night fine until about 5:30 a.m. at which time I handed her a cup of milk and she went right back down.

Katy was weaned at 8 months.  Since she did so well with a sippy cup at that point, I weaned directly to a sippy cup.  We just dropped the cup of formula before bed two nights ago.  She is almost 12 months now.  She was starting to loose interest in it.  She would drink a little then throw it to the side.  She didn't even notice that she didn't get it.

I was teaching music lessons in the evenings and Josie'd gone off the bottle at only 8 months, so around 1 year I think we switched the order of bedtime. I'd nurse her before her books instead of after, and she hardly seemed to notice. Eventually when it was time to wean from the breast completely, which we did at 15.5 months,  I just didn't jurse her one night; she still had her books as usual and never seemed to notice, which also reassured me that it was a good time to finish weaning that last feed.

Ava's 21 months and still has a bottle of milk before bedtime.
We tried last week to switch to a sipee cup but she's having none of it.
A possible reason is that she doesn't use one during the day - she drinks out of plastic beakers already.....

We doesn't fall asleep on it, so for us it's not an issue - it's something to fill her belly a bit more at night.
When she starts rejecting it we'll take it away.
