When can you stop giving cereals??? & afew other ???'s
« on: August 19, 2005, 02:04:04 am »
When do you get rid of cereal?
I'm just wondering b/c I feel it's time for us.  Isabella hasn't wanted to eat it in about 4 days.  She's going to be a year old on tuesday
Is it usually around a year when you stop?

I know you give the cereal for the iron...  well; she gets hamberg about 2-3 times a week ..  how much does she need???

Protien...   I know it's important for us to have protien at every meal... Is it the same for them???

Also;  When is it okay to introduce honey & peanut butter?

Okay; I know those are alot of questions but I've been pondering them for awhile now and just decided I should post it...

Thanks in advance...

Iron needs are greatest in the first 18 mo. If she won't eat her cereal, there are lots of other ways to get iron into her...meat, like you said, and healthy adult cereals like cheerios are good. Try mixing her cereal with different things to get her interested. Tyler decided around then that he liked it mixed with fruit juice and veggie puree.

Protein is important too, but I don't know about at every meal...

Honey and peanut butter are generally introduced around 1 yr. HTH!

I don't know if there is a "time" to stop.  I continued giving John baby cereal until he was about 15 or 18 months.  I just gave it to him in different ways. I mixed a couple of tablespoons of baby oatmeal into his regular oatmeal and used the rice cereal to thicken soups.  I also would mix rice cereal withmashed  beans to make a beans and rice kind of dish.

She needs about 10 mg of iron daily.  Here are some average iron contents of some foods:
infant cereal (1 tbsp) 1.1 mg
hamburger (2 oz) 1.8 mg
egg (1 medium) 1.0 mg
other good sources are legumes and leafy green veggies.
You can always use a multi-vitamin if you want.  (ask your doctor first)  John is vegetarian.  I don't remember if I tried to specifically give him iron rich foods or not.  I gave him a vitamin, but only when I thought about it (not every day).  And he ate beans and spinach, but not daily. At his 12 month appointment we had his blood tested for anemia.  He was well within normal ranges. The doctor was satisified.

Recommended protein amount for 6 months to 3 years is 14 - 16 grams
Typical sources are dairy products, eggs, nuts, legumes, and meat.  You can get alot from dairy without realizing it.  1/2 cup of cottage cheese has about 11 grams in it.

Our doctor said 12 months for honey and 24 months for peanut butter.  I think the recommendation for peanut butter varies from 12 - 36 months.

Can you believe she is almost 1? It flies by so quickly. You are doing a great job.  I used to call and ask our nurses questions like this too.  They knew I was feeding him well because I was thinking about it so much. You are too.  Keep thinking and asking.

Gerber has toddler cereal that are similar to the baby cereal in the nutritional value and yet have much more texture. Maybe she will prefer these.

Thank you so much Melissa, Carolyn & Sandra...  You really helped me out alot!   I never thought of mixing her cereal with other things.. I am going to start that the next time I feed her cereal.
Feeding your child can get so confussing sometimes!  You just want to do the right thing!!!   My friend was also wondering about these questions so I will pass your knowledge on to her  :D

Carolyn...  thanks for all the info; I really learned alot.
And;  No; I can't believe she's going to be a year old so soon!  I just don't understand where the time went to!  I feel like over night my baby is gone and I have this little toddler on my hands with this huge personality!  I love it, and at the same time, I'm feeling sad b/c I can never get all those times back!    I'm sure ever mother feels this way :(

Thanks ladies...I really appreciated that and it really helped me out alot
