I'm considering weaning DD from the breast to formula in the next couple of months. Any tips on how to go about it?

Hi Nancy, and welcome. I am in Rolla so it is always fun to see Missouri moms around here!

I don't have much experience with weaning to formula but I do know that with any type of weaning, one bottle or meal at a time is the best way to go. Slow and easy is best for both of you. Is there a specific reason why you think you want to wean?

I've nursed both of my children for 12 months each now, and I never dreamed I'd go this far but I'm so glad I have. Time flies when you're having fun!

As Stacy said, doing this gradually and slowly is the key. You should be replacing one feed at a time and it usually takes approximately one week for each feed. This is knowledge I have from my prenatal breastfeeding classes   as I am still not done with nursing.
I am sure some of the moms who switched from breast to formula will help you with more details as to whether mix ebm with formula or not.

Good luck!

It's nice to see more Missouri moms here! I was beginning to think I was the only one!

I only planned on nursing for about 6 months anyway...I was very large-chested before pregnancy, and so much more now that I'm nursing! I love the bonding, but it's becoming very uncomfortable for me (headaches and backaches), so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to do it.

We are going on vacation with my family at the end of the month, and my mom has offered to watch DD while DH and I go site-seeing, out to eat, etc. I could leave a bottle of EBM with her, but I would still have to pump, so I thought this might be a good time to start introducing formula. Even if I have her on at least 1-2 bottles of formula by then.

I think I've come up with a plan. DD eats at roughly the following times each day:

7:00 a.m.
11:00 a.m.
3:00 p.m.
5:30 p.m. (sometimes)
8:00 p.m. (bedtime)
Then bottle dreamfeed at 11:00p.m. and usually one night feed around 4:00 a.m.

I think I will take one week to replace the 11:00 a.m. feeding with formula, then one week for the 3:00 p.m. feeding. She would be on 2 bottles of formula a day by the time we go on vacation, and then I could continue doing the morning feed and bedtime feed (DH does dreamfeed) for a couple more months until I'm ready to completely stop BF.

I remember reading something from Tracy about how to stop BF so that you don't become engorged. I don't remember exactly, but I think it was something about pumping for 2-3 days at the regular feed time, then decreasing your pumping time by 3 minutes for another 2-3 days until you dry up at that time. Does that sound right to anyone?

Sorry this is so long, this is my first experience with BF, so I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work!  :D

We just went on 'vacation' where I left ebm for ds with my mom too, how funny! I used a little ISIS on-the-go hand pump and it worked so well. But I wasn't ready to be done with breastfeeding yet. Max is 12.5 months old!

I read once that there are different positions you can nurse in to create less strain on your back, like laying down to nurse. Also make sure you are using your boppy pillow so there is less weight for your arms/back/neck to hold, if you are nursing sitting.

My breasts never did go back to normal size when I was done nursing #1.

Good luck!

YIKES! I'm hoping my breasts will return to "normal" or even smaller. That happened for my sister and a good friend of mine. I guess one can hope.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Has anyone got tips on weaning for a 2 1/4 year old?  She is REALLY attached to the breast and screams if I continue to say 'no'.  I can delay her for a while, even a few hours, but she always remembers and keeps asking for 'boobie'.  I always said if they can ask for it they are too old.  I am really getting to the end of my tether because sometimes to avoid a scene I need to do it in public, and whilst I don't usually care what others think, increasingly I am embarrassed to be feeding a child this age.
She also wakes for night feeds as well.  I think this has become habit over time.  Should I go cold turkey or tackle night feeds first?
thanks
