Protein question - what are the current rules???
« on: August 05, 2005, 18:23:44 pm »
I am really confused about the protein question.  DS is exacty 6 months and 3 weeks.  I weaned him 3 weeks ago and he has had all the usual veg and some fruit (still working through the list!)..  I would really like to try out some protein - maybe some pureed lentils or even chicken/fish.  What is the rule about protein and if it is best to delay until later, why is that?  :?

I have also read conflicting advice about green veg like spinach...has anyone got any advice about this too?

My understanding is that meat and tofu (both protein foods) can be introduced around 7-8 mo. Other protein sources like legumes and beans (including lentils) should be introduced closer to 9 mo, as they can be difficult for a less mature digestive system to process. Leafy greens like spinach should be introduced around 9 mo for the same reason. HTH!

Protein question - what are the current rules???

Hi Melissa,

Thanks very much for this advice - 2 days ago I made a batch of pureed lentils and froze 12 servings (ice cubes) for use over the next couple of weeks.  I've already given DS two of those :(  (mixed with sweet potatoe which actually tastes really good - for future reference!).

As I've only given him a little bit, I hope it hasn't caused any lasting damage (I should have waited for your reply but I was running out of interesting foods to try out).  I'll defrost the batch and make a soup for DH and me to use it up and I'll stick to the straightforward (non leafy green veg).

I'm really grateful to you for letting me know.

Why is it so difficult to find out the rules about first foods from our so called professional health support???  As an example, I only found out about the caution with strawberries by reading it on this website!!

If he's already had the lentils, I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially if he did okay with them. The only issue that you might run into is gas or tummyache, but it sounds like he didn't have an issue with either. It's up to you if you'd like to continue offering them or hold off. The lentils will keep for a bit in the freezer...probably at least 3 mo if you want to save them for later!

It is frustrating to try and figure out what to introduce when, isn't it? I bought a book to help when Tyler started solids. I used "Super Baby Foods" by Ruth Yaron, and some other folks have recommended Annabel Karmel's book as well. Also, a helpful website is

Zeena - hope this helps...

The current advice that I have been given, here in the UK, is that proteins can be introduced from about 7 months - starting with white fish, chicken and beef - moving onto other stronger tasting meat and fish once your baby is happy to. You probably know this, but I have been told to give protein only at lunch solid feed, as if there is a reaction, the aftermath will happen in the afternoon and not disrupt evening sleeping -  tummyache etc

I have the Annabel Karmel book - some really great recipies - Benjamin has loved every one so far!

Hope this helps
