how much milk should I give my 15 month old?
« on: August 08, 2005, 08:19:36 am »
Hi,
I'd be interested in hearing some views about milk for toddlers, because I seem to be hearing conflicting reports about how much they need (the latest being a minimum of 12 oz...)
My DD has 4/5 oz milk in a beaker at b'fast time (in addition to whatever is on her cereal), then another 4/5 oz mid afternoon then ANOTHER 7 oz before bedtime. This is in addition to all the yoghurt (which she loves), cheese sauces etc...
I have a feeling I'm giving her too much milk in her beaker, but she loves it and wolfs it down. :D That's cool, except she really doesn't drink much water (I am a meanie and don't offer her anything else, mostly because she won't drink it). It would be cool to hear how much everyone else's LOs are drinking....
Thanks

My dd probably drinks about 18-24 ounces a day plus water in between meals.  I too am a meanie and don't offer anything else.      She doesn't know what she's missing yet.  I'm not sure why there's a "limit" on how much they're supposed to have unless it's based on calorie intake or that they won't eat enough and get other nutrients or what...  But my dd loves milk and I let her have it, but only at meals if I can help it so she doesn't get "too much"...whatever that is...

In the UK the minimum recommended is around 300/350mls which is around 12 ounces. This doeant have to all be taken as a drink as there is calcium in other food too e.g cheese, yoghurts, etc . Any milk on cereal also counts. I have also read that you should limit milk intake to around 1 pint a day (about 600mls) as any more than that could curb the appetite for solid foods.

My dd has a couple of ounces of either milk or fresh orange in a beaker along with her breakfast and a small avent magic cup of milk before bed and this is all the milk she drinks. She has either water or well diluted juice during the day/with her other meals. The rest of her intake is made up of yoghurt, cheese, etc

I limit Tyler to 18-24 oz per day, and that includes other dairy sources like cheese and yogurt. The main reason why milk should be limited is that it's very filling and may curb your LO's appetite for other foods, which could result in a deficiency of some nutrients like vitamin C and iron (milk is lacking in both). I offer water or watered down milk when Tyler's getting close to his limit for the day. He'd gladly drink a gallon a day if I let him!
