Nikki, What do you do for A time?
Usually we have plenty of floor time - Early morning (7-8:30/9:00) she is usually playing and chatting with us on our bed while we get ready for the day. She has lots of soft toys with teething pieces that she loves and also a "gum stimulator" which works great. I usually put her in her car seat about 30 min before I leave for week as she is already frustrated from tummy time and being unable to go forwards to the toys (she goes backwards!!!) Midmorning again tummy time and sitting time - just exploring different toys with textures. Nothing really structred. I think the key is to have just 1 or 2 toys in front of her and then take them away before I introduce 2 other ones. (She does have her favourites!!)
hwcampbell: Thanx - it makes sense - will give it a try next week when I have some more energy - work is crazy!!

Naps - morning (9-10), afternoon (1-2), and catnap (4:30) Ditto on the "Somedays they are 45 min, somedays 2 hours" comment
Sitting - still hunched over with minimum support
Teeth - NONE YET (oooh I am dreading this
Dreamfeed - Jip between 10:00 and 11:00 depending when mom goes down
Morning wake up time - between 6 and 7:00
Bedtime - 7
Favorite toy - Red ladybird with green teething wings
Favorite Activity - Bathtime  we have to move to the big tub as all the furniture in the room is soaked when done!! Also loves anything with music

I've gotta ask.  Is anyone else having problem with whining?  Kinlagh is in this phase where all she does is moans and whines - to the point that her face turns red.  Very seldom do we hear a full out cry unless she's hurt or really upset.  Otherwise it's this moaning.  Kind of just a mix of mmmmmmmm and yummmmmmm.  It's a really annoying sound when you hear it for hours.  So I'm wondering if anyone else is going/has gone through this and if it's just a phase that she'll grow out of.

Also, have any of you started to use "NO" ?  I'm considering it for this whining, but not sure if they're too young for "discipline".

Thoughts?

Michelle - Leah doesn't whine, but I have started using no with her. She likes to grab ahold of my hair and pull. I don't use a strict NO! just yet. I always release her grasp and say no, no - mommy's hair. I don't know if it's too early, but I figure it can't hurt. Lately she lets go and plays with something else, so maybe she understands?  :?

can't stop and post much as we have been in a yucky place the past few days - teething sucks!!  yesterday she drank a total of a whoppoing 21 oz. and that was with me slipping in an extra bottle.  she is cryng and uncomfortable and it is driving me mad. she is not down for first nap yet and i have an 11am Dr appt i will have to wake her for.

had 6 mo shots yesterday - she screamed the place down
constipation has now turned to disgusting poo - up to 3 times a day (yellow, explosive and stinky!) - can this be linked to teeth?  or the 1 tsp of pears she had 3 hrs before it all started the other day (we are on day 3 of the poop) or the change in formula letting her finally clear out her system completely???

Michelle and Christine- Eirwen seems to love whining right now  . It's awful.  I have a 3 limit rule, as she has also started dropping her toys off the side of wherever she is (highchair, floor chair, couch, etc).  So three tries of changing activity/toy/location and then it is nap time no matter what!  It's not really discipline but I am sort of saying "okay too much play time, time to calm down" at least that is what I hope I'm doing. :?   I have thought of the no word too (in regards to hair pulling/breast pinching) but have also heard/read that at this age any reaction will be considered a game and they are more likely to do it again to get the reaction.  I read that the part of their brain that can actually comprehend "no" isn't developed yet and the best to do is redirect but this can be so exhausting.  I say other words I guess "gentle", "soft", "careful".  Maybe I have an adversion to no? hmmmmm

Deborah- just had a feeling last time about you! Hang in there! (((hugs)))

Afraid to comment on having #2   I've been mentioning but dh SOOO not ready to even talk about it!!!!

Here is the list!  Christine- this is such a great idea.  I have loved reading where everyone is!

Rolling - Nope (did once at 7 weeks on video never again :? )
Crawling - No, but has started pulling forward
Breast or Formula- Breast, every 3 to 3.5 hrs
Solids - 2x a day, oatmeal w/ fruit at breakfast, multigrain cereal and veggie at lunch. usually 7am and 1pm
Sleeping thru the night - Yes
Naps - morning (7:30-9), midday (11-12:30), and afternoon (2-4)
Sitting - yes, but will topple over
Teeth - nope
Dreamfeed - Never
Morning wake up time - between 5:30-6:15
Bedtime - 5:00-5:30  I know!!!
Favorite toy - Stacking rings by Fisher Price
Favorite Activity - Warehouse shopping (also likes lights!) and the park, could stare at moving tree leaves forever!!! :D
Lovie - Not yet but I think she wants our white cat to be it
Excema - Yes, but no outbreak since calendula cream! YAY!
Reflux - Nope but had overactive letdown bf issues early months- caused reflux like symptoms, thank god it's gone!!
Back or Belly -back but now rolls to side in middle of the night
Swaddle - Not since 8 wks
Paci - No- would always spit it out
Weight/Height - at 6 months was 17 lbs and 28 inches
Eye/Hair color - blonde and blue eyes
Work or SAHM - an adjusting SAHM, and seconding Heather as long as we can afford it!!
Name & origin - Eirwen, Welsh, means "Snow White" very fitting considering she was born during a "state of emergency" blizzard in MA. Oh, my name is from Welsh mythology Branwen- "goddess of love and beauty" (I know, I know), means White Raven.

Branwen, I just can't get over how Eirwen goes to bed so early even after that 3rd nap.  What a sleeping beauty!!!

I had this question I was just burning to get to the computer and ask, but of course my mommy brain has forgotten.  Anyway, I've thought of another.  I need a suggestion with possibly adjusting bedtime for Kelsey.  She has gone over 1 week with absolutely no catnap after 4 pm, even though I try to get her to take one when she's obviously tired around 6 pm.  Because of this, she is soooooo tired all evening, but I have her last bottle to give at 7:30, and that's only 3.5 hours from her bottle at 4.  Should I move it to 7 anyway and try to put her to bed earlier?  I'm just concerned about the spacing of feeds and whether or not she'd be hungry enough after only 3 hours.  She takes solids at 4 also, so should I drop that for now?  If so, when would I bring dinner back?  I would really rather give her a bottle at 4, then "dinner" at 5:30, but then she still has that last bottle to take and I don't want too many feedings bunched in together.  Am I making sense?

I use "no," but in a light-but-different-than-usual tone.  She recognizes that it is different but just looks at me.  I don't take it too seriously, but I know that I will be the authoritarian in our household.  I am even with the dog; dh is a softy.

Debra, sorry that you've had some rough days.  Poor Olivia.  Surely the moms with teething babies can respond about the messy poop, but I have heard that teething does make for some bad diapers.  Or, like you said, she's cleaning out her system.   Hang in there, dear, we are here for you.

Oh, my question!!!!!  I remembered!!!!!!
For those of you bottle feeding, do you know if it really matters what flow-rate nipple you use?  Kelsey is still on #1, with the hole slightly enlarged with a toothpick, because she has never seemed dissatisfied with it.  I'm afraid if I change to the fast flow for 6+ months that it will be too fast and she'll choke.  Any advice welcomed.  Also, did you know that Avent, at least, recommends replacing the nipples every 3 months?  Wonder if that's totally necessary or just a way to get you to spend money with them?

Ohhh, totally the same here!  :D I'll be the mean mommy someday and DD will run to daddy everytime I discipline her!

Deb - Leah has been so constipated since we started solids. Now that she is teething she has has loose stools too. I know some say there is no relationship, but in my case I think there was/is. The two bottom teeth are thru, and I see the bottom left eye tooth is now coming. Someone told me, once they start it seems that the teeth just keep coming!

Branwen - the comment you made on the word no is very intersting! Are you a freaky book reader like I am?!?!? I think I've read every pregnancy/child raising book out there!

Heather. Leah has a bottle around 3:30 - 4, then solids at 5:30 and her last bottle at 7. She takes 6 oz at 3:30, and will still take 7-8 oz before bed. It's worth a try! I don't know what bottles you use, but the playtex stage 2 nipples are too fast for Leah. I use the playtex bottles, with Dr. Brown nipples and she still uses the ones for 3-6 months. I guess if they like what they're using and it's not causing problems, don't change!

Okay, now that I finally figured out how to resize my pics to post here (thanks Branwen), how the heck do I put one in the left column under subject. Everyone else here has figured this out except for me!

I have to also tell you all that I am totally jealous of the naps most of you are getting.  We are struggling with 45 minutes, an hour if were lucky. I spoke to the whisperer lady today, first she costs a small fortune, second she isnt available until October.

She basically told me (very nicely) that we are "being played" by Matty, regarding the nap thing. of course the paci and the pat/sh are props now (which I knew).  But darned if I know how to get the little guy to sleep otherwise.  sigh

so here I am knowing that I am not quite getting the sleep thing but not knowing how to do it, and having to wait until October til the expert can show me.  If we decide to go ahead and spend the money.  I will try rereading the book again but I still dont think Im gonna get it.  She said since Matty is sitting now, its gonna be the P/U P/D thats gonna do it.  Im not crazy about that method!  sigh

Julie

PS - Since we have two Julie's can we refer to us as JulieB and JulieG maybe?  Me being the Julie G!

Also, JulieB, Matty and Asher have the same birthday!  1/31/05

Michelle: OMG, I thought it was just Asher!  He still cries, but he seems to whine all day every day now!      This is why I've wondered if he's cutting another tooth.  I don't really react to the whining (besides copying his moans at times!  ).  But I've started saying no and redirecting him when he gets into something he shouldn't (our shoes, the dog toys, cords, etc).

Deb: So sorry things have been rough!!  You're right about the poo, could be any number of things you mentioned!  My first guess was the teething, but maybe the formula change?  I hope things improve for you soon!
Oh, and Asher LOVED LOVED LOVED that tiny love monkey for the longest time!  He especially liked chewing on the hand.  I totally remember Slam Books as well!  Loved them!

Branwen:
Eirwen pinches your breast?  Asher has started this a few days ago and it hurts!  I clipped his nails this morning but it still hurts!  He seems to only do it on one side.  It makes me wonder if he's trying to force the milk out faster (that's NOT the way to go about it!   :? ).   What is it?  Is it typical of them?  I've never heard of other babies doing it.

Heather: Don't know if this will help since I BF and Asher doesn't eat solids at dinner yet...his last two feeds are always closer together and he seems to eat the same.  He may eat as early as 3:00 or as late as 5:00, but I still end up feeding him again around 6:30-6:45 before bed to tank him up.  After being up a few hours of activity, he needs to be refueled again to make it longer at night.  And on days he skips his catnap and/or has short naps, I move his bedtime up to compensate, usually timing it no more than 2.5 hours after he woke up from the previous nap.  You don't what them to be too overtired when going to bed or they might have restless sleep.
Oh, and Asher still uses the #1 Dr. Brown's nipples when taking a bottle.  I have the next size, just never tried it.  It's not a big deal.  And I've read about the nipple replacement as well, I guess they deteriorate over time (like pacis).

JulieG: Too Funny!  Bosom Buddies!
Do you have the latest BW book?  I really think that one's the key with sleep!  And you're right, I think PU/PD will at least be worth a try for a few days.  It's not all bad!  It works easily for us.  Is Matty mobile yet?  I don't know if you've read any of my posts about the extra mobility and the sudden good naps -- that's what it took for Asher to drop the 45 min thing.  We still have them every now and then, but for the most part, he sleeps 1.5-2.5 hours!
Oh, and you can add pics and sigs through your profile -- click the "profile" link at the top of the page.

HI guys - had to come online to share a great success!  Olivia was not having any of her catnap (up since 2pm) so i gave up and got her up.  i figured while Alex was having her dinner i woudl try O. on some cereal (was out at usual solids attempt time) to stretch her until Dh gets home later.

i was really patient and encouraging and had major success.  i did lots of praise, dd1 was clapping for her, and she actually ate about 4 spoons of the stuff.  what worked (besides giving her a spoon too) was putting the spoon on her lips and really encouraging her, she then opened her mouth and tried some.  i am not saying she loved it, but by the 3rd spoon she was actually opening the hatch before i tried to get in  :D   after bite number 4 or 5?  she was done and i did not push for another one.

great stuff!!! especially since it has been an exhausting couple of days - endless poop and tears and still no bloody teeth     her sitting up is going amazing though and she is now sitting up under her gymini playing with the toys! and has not fallen over once today - she sat up in her stroller sitting forward at the front of the seat the entire doctor's appt. - she was impressed!

BTW - doctor cannot get me any allergy tests for Olivia and does not think i shoudl chase up a referral (for a 6 mo you need to go to the children's hospital and only a specialist can refer you so need to be in serious trouble...).  she said if it is a mild intolerance to milk than better to let her grow out of it.  if it is a dust thing or environmental, then she said i don't want to see what they woudl make me do to get her environment better... - firm believer in letting kids get stronger over time, etc I agreed to leave it for a couple of months and try to vacuum her room more than once a week
