Nikki, how sweet!  That picture will always be special for both of you.  And I hope your friendships continue for many years to come.

these pictures are adorable!  Deborah - Maya has some gorgeous eyes!  Heather - that biker babe is hysterical!

we need to catch up a little bit too:
Name & origin - Luke Samuel; they're both Hebrew names but i really just liked them, and with his middle name Samantha was one of my favorite girls names & my grandfather was Samuel. (i swear, i was NOT aiming to have all star wars babies!!!)
I'm a - Boy
Birthday - January 23, 2005
Type - Touchy
First, second, third child of how many?? - second of hopefully 2
Ticklish? - yes, especially along his back

Schae, i was due Feb. 15.  i figured he would be a little early (jaina was 2 weeks early) but almost a month was quite a surprise!

Heather - i think you only need to move to a faster nipple if she doesn't seem happy with her feeds.  jaina was on a newborn nipple until around this age i think, but luke is up to #3!  as far as replacing every 3 months... it's probably a good idea.  i think especially with ff & using them so much they get worn down.  but i'd probably look & see how worn they were.

Nikki - sometimes with an ear infection it hurts to lie down completely horizontal.  it may help to elevate the head of the mattress a bit (put some blankets underneath)

Debra - hope things get better.  sounds like they're improving a bit.

Tarri - hope Emily keeps sleeping all night for you.  you must be thrilled!

Christine - Luke went on a nap strike when he started at the sitters' too, but by the end of the week he was taking pretty good naps again.  every so often he has a bad morning, but for the most part he's napping well now.  i think it just takes some adjusting to the new place & new routine - and it's fun to drive mommy crazy!!!!!!

have a great day!!!
Jaime

Michelle - slam books were notebooks tween girls woudl create with a list of questions and it woudl get passed around a class / school and each girl woudl fill in a whole page with her answers for everyone to see. ?s were typical preteen stuff about crushes and favourite everything...

Christine - i woudl definitely chalk the napping at sitters up to adjusting to the change - once that becomes her "normal" location sghe will develop a  new routine.  you might find you have to adapt at home to accept that what she does Mon - Fri is her new "norm" - some kids nap BETTER at the sitters because other kids are doing it... so i say wait and see what develops when she is there for 2 weeks full time...

I cannot believe your l/d story.  that would be so upsetting.  and how cra*py of insurance companies that they woudl not transfer her

Deborah - Olivia LOVES wheels on the bus.  it could be because it was alex's favourite for ages and we sang it in the house 50 times a day (felt like it at least) and she likes anything involving clapping -

Schae - due date was Feb 9 and i was induced on the 19th but they think my dates were wrong and she was not actually overdue!  who knows.  i did not have a scan for dating in the begining (only the 18 week one) because i had so many ultrasounds with alex (had cysts burst, bleeding, etc so had about 4-6 in the first 16 weeks with her)

Heather - hysterical tough guy photo

Julie b and Tarri - glad to hear your nights are going better

Us - is it possible to have a split in growth spurt?  i only ask because i thought we had ours at 5 1/2 mo or so and then she was eating less than ever before.  now yesterday she increased eating and today woke crying for food at 6:15!!! it has thrown me.  and she was tired after 1 hr 30 and i put her down around 8am (we are well "off track" today) and of course she went down fine but she just woke after 45 min and is squealing.  not due for food for ages and shoudl need more sleep than this!!  i am so confused!  she is still so inconsistent with eating and sleeping! it is hard to stay "on track"  :?   usually she is first going down for a nap at 9ish and now she is awake from 1st nap - what do i do with her for the rest of the time?  enough rambling!

still no tooth but still crying when i go to lay her down, 2 poops yesterday and chomping on toys and my finger.

Schae, Emily's due date was Feb.11.  They were going to induce me the next day.

Deborah, I like you song changes  :) I'm going to try it out tommorw.  Emily's favourite song is 'put your right hand in, take your right hand out...', I get big smiles after I turn around.  Very super cutie photo!

Heather, that's terrible that you had a car accident  .  I know I would be unnerved too.  So glad that Kelsey wasn't there.  HUGS.

Branwen, about book reading...this evening I sat emily in her tube and gave her a simple toy and I sat in a chair close to her and read her long children stories.  She listened contentedly for 20 mins!  This is awesome becuase if I read to her while she's in my lap she won't even last 5 mins.

Debra, it sounds like lots of us are having nap problems these days.  I guess it's another adjustment period where they are close to staying awake longer and don't need so much nap time...just guessing.  I was thinking about you lo's bottle problems and you lo's weight and she must be quite high on the weight curve for her age, cause mine weighs less and is at the 80th percentile.  I think both our lo's drink less because somehow they're getting more fat from it that other lo's and this is their way of making sure they don't get too overweight.  Just my theory.

Us, I HATE removing boogers from Emily's nose  .  If she isn't patient enough she starts crying and I feel like I've fought a battle by the time I'm done.  Uhg.  Today I bought a sippy cup.  I'm going to see if she'll drink water from it when we come in from a stroll.  The BW book says to start at 6 months, it seems early to me but I guess it's going to take a lot of practice.

Have a good night everyone!   8) Tarri

Tarri, I started a sippy cup for Asher at 5.5 months because he was showing such an interest in our dinner, but I didn't want to start solids.  We taught him how to use it the same way the BW suggests.  He got it in a couple of sessions and he's really good at it now.  He'll take water and EBM in it.  Now that we've started solids, I give him the sippy cup of water right along with his meal and he sips between bites.

Sleeping thru the night - for the past 2 weeks continuously and on and off before that
Naps - mostly 45 mins and 1.5 hrs when we are ready to go outside!Sitting unassisted -very well!
Teeth - one at 4.5 months(bottom right one) and the other at 5.5 months(bottom left one).
Morning wake up time - between 6.45 to 7.45(depends at what time she went to bed)
Bedtime - 8-9
Favorite toy - cloth book and toy telephone's tag
Favorite Activity - crawling backwards for now and bath
Lovie - none even though I try to thrust a stuffed doggie on her!
Excema - two patches behind her elbows(coin size, I am not sure if it's eczema though)
Reflux - no
Back or Belly - Sleeps on side and tummy now even though she used to be a back sleeper
Swaddle - never really liked to be swaddled
Paci - till she was 11 wks old and weaned completely now(I got some great paci weaning buddies due to that bad habit though)
Sucks thumb - yes, when trying to sleep and between spoons of solids Weight/Height - 6months 15 lbs and 11 oz and 27 inches
Eye/Hair color - black hair and eyes
Work or SAHM - SAHM
Name & origin - Diya (means lamp/light in an Indian language called hindi) DH wanted something short so that it could be pronounced easily by everyone
I'm a - Girl
Birthday - Jan 25, 2005
Type - Textbook/Angel and a touch of touchy
First, second, third child of how many?? - 1st of hopefully 2
Ticklish? - not really
Matty's looks so cute!
JulieB, Asher looks adorable. I think he resembles you! Is that what you hear from everyone? I haven't seen your DH though. I always wanted to see a recent pic of Asher everytime I saw your previous avatar.
Deborah! Maya looks precious!
Nikki! That is such an awesome pic!
I don't have any pic of the town where we live. I am originally from Madras, India. I have been living in the U.S for 7 years now.
Christine, JulieB andBranwen: My friends and family think I am going nuts about baby rearing and that this whole thing about textbook parenting is going to spoil the baby somehow. How do I explain to them that Diya started sleeping better and eating better after reading a lot of books. I am a FTM and didn't have a clue for the first 6 weeks about anything and my Mom doesn't live in this country. All my friends including a pediatrician told me not to let her sleep during the day so that she will sleep better in the night. My hands were full for the first 6 weeks:(
Christine! That must have been awful not to see the baby for 2 days. I just couldn't wait to see Diya from the time I conceived that I went for 4-5 ultrasounds and 1 3d ultrasound:)
Deb! So sorry about Liv's poo problems.  I think that it could be because of teething/formula change too! So sweet to hear about Alex's talking.
Heather, some days I have to let Diya cry so that lets off steam and relax in a different way for that particular nap. Sometimes, she moans/sings before she goes to sleep. She stopped doing that now though and I miss that.
Schae! my EDD was Jan 19 and she came 6 days late
Michelle! Diya used to whine every time she was about to hit a developmental milestone or when she was teething. Right now, she so wants to crawl forwards that she doesn't want to do anything else! I am not even trying to entertain her in any other form. I put her on her tummy and I keep crawling and rolling so that she will get it:) Also, I put some toy in front of her so that she can get it. She goes backwards and then starts whining so much.

Diya's favorite song right now is Johnny Johnny! She used to love Wheels on the bus, If you are happy and you know, Pat a cake.  She tries to find me if I hide under her high chair and also opens her mouth if I say open your mouth. She doesn't do it spontaneously every time though. Some times, I have to open my mouth before I start repeating it a thousand times so that she will remember the next time. I hope I don't sound like I am pushing her too much. Since she is going to be bilingual/trilingual, I am in a hurry to teach her some words!

Sorry about the long post!

Happy 6 months to Olivia and Emily! YAY :D

Schae- my due date was supposed to be Feb 5th, but Eirwen was 2 weeks early.  It was kind of funny, she came the day after I left my job.  It was like- ok- you're not busy anymore here I come!  I knew she would be early though because I had the whole nesting thing going on BAD!

I love all the photos of everyone's babies.  They are adorable, stunning...I must say this is the most beautiful pack of babies I have ever seen!

I'm posting some new ones of Eirwen in the photo gallery of our sweet potato experiences

Tarri- I love the book idea! That is wonderful!  I will try putting Eirwen in her jumper (she doesn't jump) and read to her there.  Maybe she will like it.  Now that I got quite a collection of little board books she enjoys them more I think, esp the ones with flaps.

Vidya- about the book reading- yes, I have gotten in trouble from my mom who thinks I over analyze everything- and thinks just about every method I use is insane.  She also doesn't believe in temperaments.  But I try to tell her that once I realized (and accepted) my dd was touchy I knew certain things about how to help her, and me!  She started sleeping better, not eating every hr and in general turned into a much happier baby.  Everyone comments on how "calm" Eirwen is.  I smile and thank them, because I know the truth 8) , and the reason she is calm is because honestly I have done so much work to try to understand her, protect her naps (as Tracy says), etc.  I think it has helped me a lot being a first time mom(my mom also lives far away, no family in MA)- so poohy on those who don't believe!!! I do get in trouble sometimes though because I want her to "match up" and when she doesn't I get a little worried.  Like this morning I read that if she wasn't rolling in either direction or putting weight on her legs I need to call my ped  In this sense my researching can be trouble...

Christine- your birth experience makes me feel so lucky! I am so glad that you're ok and will be able to have more children! I would have died if I hadn't seen the baby for such a long time, evil insurance companies  .

Heather- I have those nap experiences with Eirwen.  Sometimes I just get out of there.  It's like I am making it worse with PUPD.  She has this horrid look of disgust when I try to "help her" now.  So I leave and honestly 2-3 min of crying and she's out.  I think sometimes her activities just leave her frustrated and tired.  Because she is so well sleep trained now I often don't use PUPD if she has issues in the first few minutes.

JulieB & Sippy Cup- does Asher hold it himself? Can he drink from it without help?!  I have been giving Eirwen one for about a month now.  She drinks dilluted juice in it, but she cannot tip it up far enough, although she can hold it and suck from it alone. Which kind do you use- I have 4 different kinds and none seem to be particularly working for her...except maybe this cheap one I got at the grocery store, but that one is not spill proof so I always have to help her.  Ideas?

Us- teething day yesterday.  She was very grumpy and whiney and not nursing, but motrin helped a little I think- and distracting her with activities.

OMG - Olivia is having her 6 months growth spurt (again - see my post on bottle feeding board)!!!  She woke at 6:15 this morning starving for the first time EVER and she has wanted food every 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hrs (and that was me holding her off) It worked in my favour at least for the solids as she wolfed down a ton today.  Unfortunately she is now up at 9:30 (2 + hours since dinner bottle)  and crying for food again!!! She has recently been eating an average feed of 130 ml (4 1/2 oz) This was our day today:

up 6:15 (never wakes this bloody early - and crying too)
6:30 190 ml (7 oz)
nap 8- 8:45
up 9:15 and really crying for food by 9:30-9:45
10am 240 ml (8 + oz)
nap 1115 - 1245
crying for food by 1:15pm
1:30 165 ml (6 oz) and a massive poo
nap 3-3:45pm
very hungry again by 4:20-4:30
4:45 140 ml (5 oz)  - did not offer a second drink figuring she would have solids and another bottle
5:20 good size bowl of rice cereal + several spoons of pears - she was not only opening wide for it, but leaning forward and reaching for bowl and spoon with mouth wide open    i have never seen her this hungry in 6 months
6:45pm another 170 ml (6 oz)
9:30 crying & desperate for food - she just ate another 250ml (8+ oz)

total for today: 1155ml (42+ oz)

the question is - will she sleep through the night??? or am i faced with a night feed  - urg - i have had 2 glasses of red wine, a bit of dark chocolate and am watching Pulp Fiction - i was actually thinking of staying up with Dh tonight   something will have to be sacrificed - i guess it will be my sleep.  I am so thrilled about the opportunity to work on the solids though.  you should have seen her - it was like a starving person in a cartoon faced with a giant piece of meat. she would have kept eating but i took her big spit up as a sign that she was being super-greedy!

is this what it was like for everyone else for this last growth spurt???

Schae - DD's due date was January 15th and born January 19th.

Christine - Glad everything's ok after the complications during delivery.  I'm happy for you that you're still considering another.  Good for you!

Deborah - Kinlagh's whining gets worse as the day goes on too.  Yesterday we were out shopping and running errands and she didn't whine half as much so I'm thinking it may be a little boredom too.  Have to get her out of the house a little more.  We need a 2nd car!!!!!!
And as for Kinlagh's favorites songs...anything we can do a dance too.  Such as itsy bitsy spider and 5 little monkeys...  I love that she can anticipate the next move.  So cute.

Heather -
Quote (selected)
I started to feel as if she just wanted me to leave so she could get some rest. Do you know what I mean?
I completely know what you mean.  If I'm in the room, she follows my every move, wants to play, or wants to be picked up.  So I do the same and just leave the room which usually works.  I completely understand about not wanting anything to hurt our precious lo's.  Not as serious as your car accident - but there have been times when it was my fault that she got a little hurt (bug bite, bump on her head - minor stuff) and I felt sick to my stomach all day that I could have prevented it.  I hated that I was the cause of her pain (again very minor pain).  So I can't even (and don't want to) imagine anything serious happening to her.  CHANGE THE TOPIC PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Nikki - gorgeous pic of the 3 friends.  Babies are so adorable aren't they?

Tarri - Ditto on the boogers.  Kinlagh hates when I go anywhere near her nose...which of course makes it harder and take longer than it actually should if she would just let me in there!!      We started the sippy cup a short while ago too.  Every now and then she gets a sip, but mostly she chews on the tip.  But she's at least getting the concept of holding the cup and tilting it to her mouth.   She's much prefer to drink from our "adult" cups though - too cute.

US - Kinlagh is 7 months today!  Yay!  So it's picture day.  I go crazy to make sure we get at least 1 worthy of her baby book.  We still haven't had an obvious growth spurt - except that she's really eating more solids lately.  But no night wakings for a bottle.  Strange.  Had a great nap day yesterday - of course on the day that I had the car and was able to get out.  So we finally went out to the mall...at 4:00pm!  Oh well, can't complain when she's sleeping well right?

Debra, I can't believe Olivia drank 42 oz!!!!  And solids too?!!!!  That definately sounds like a growth spurt to me.  How did your night go?  Emily is still drinking 30oz max but a few spoonfuls of solids.  Oh and when you mentioned that our babies are half way thru to their first birthday, I thought OH MY GOODNESS they are growing up tooooo fast.

Us, well we had two nights of sleeping thru and then last night she woke 3 times and I had to go in.  One time she had her head stuck against the crib slats.

PS I added some more pictures to the gallery:)

Happy 6 month birthday Olivia and Emily! and 7 months to Kinlagh! They grow so fast.

Thanks for all of the support about my aweful post-labor experience. I knew you guys would understand! Thanks also for the support about the sitter. I think all will go well eventually. We're going again today, but I am staying so I can chat with the sitter and we can talk about Leah.

Deb - 42 ounces!!! Wow Liv! I have no idea if she'll sleep the night. You would think with that many ounces during the day she should!

AHHHHHH! You know those kids you see at the grocery store sitting in the cart with snot running out of their noses and you're like EWWW! Well that's my child! I think we have our first cold. Last night she woke at 12:20 and a bunch of times till 2:00 and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I finally took her out of her crib and she was so stuffed up she couldn't breath. So I had to suction her nose, which made her SOO mad, so then I had to smile and say Yay Mommy! Everytime I suctioned, well then she thought it was play time so she wouldn't go back to sleep.  Just a bad night! Now today we have tons of snot running from the nose. What do you all do during a cold to help them?

Sippy cups - any recommendations on brands? I though about asking the ladies in the Oct-Dec thread. Maybe I will, seeing they should have already tried them all!

I am also a bit of a bookworm!!! and my need to know everything have gotten me into some hot water with my FIL (father inlaw??)

He usually cannot see Lise during the day due to work so he arrives at our house at 6:30pm and then does not understand why I take her away for her evening routine! also wants me to just come and leave her with him and my MIL when he has an afternoon off - I tried to explain seperation anxiety raised its ugly head and that I want to wait untill she understands that when I leave I am coming back ...

so he wanted to know where I get all this from!! and that I read to much. DEEP BREATHS!!! I think they maybe feel a little left out as my mom look after Lise while I work (my office is inside her house!!) Anyway

CONGRATULATIONS on the "Month-day's" to all that is celebrating. Time does fly!!
Quote (selected)
I am so thrilled about the opportunity to work on the solids though
Gave lise some banana yesterday ... you should have seen the funny face - kinda scruched up her left eye while her tongue was working!! Maybe she has enough fuel now to keep her through the night! (Ishould think so!!) I will hold thumbs for the wine, pizza and movie - we have the same idea for tonight

Re Sippy cups - I would really like to know which you guys found useful. Lise holds hers (NUK-with plastic spout anyone tried the ones with silicone spouts??) and brings it to her mouth but the "leakproof" opening makes it darn near impossible for her to know that she must Suck and not just chew it as nothing comes out!!

till later

Ok, first things first, for those of you who were interested in our visit to the ped's office today about Maya's flat head.  We discussed it at her 6-mos visit and decided to give it another month hoping that she's start sitting up unassisted, thus taking the pressure off her head.  Well, that hasn't happened yet, so I started looking more closely at her and recent photos we've taken and realized that her face is no longer quite symmetrical.  You wouldn't notice it if you weren't looking for it, but dh are a little concerned that not only is it not getting better, it seems to be getting worse.  She favors that side of her head not matter what position you sit her down in, even when sitting upright in her stroller.

So, upon examination, it seems that the muscles in her neck are still tighter on the right than the left, making it difficult and prob uncomfortable for her to turn her head to the left.  I believe it's called torticollis.  The way to check for it is to lay her on her back and slowly turn her head from one side to the other.  She should have an equal range of motion in both directions.  Maya can touch her chin to her shoulder on the right, but not on the left.

They've referred us to a physical therapist for the muscle issue and to a neurologist for the flat head.  I'm sure the PT can help us out with some exercises, and I'm hoping they can make some suggestions as to how we can position her in her crib to minimize any additional pressure on the flat spot.  The ped also mentioned the banding, but there's no place local that does it.  The closest centers are in Miami and Atlanta, both an 8-hour drive from here.  We'll see what the neurologist has to say and take it from there.

Oh yeah, and it turns out they did the math wrong last time we were there (their scales are metric).  She only weighs 14lbs 7oz (she is 7 mos and 1 wk today), putting her back in the 10th %ile for weight.

I posted on the product recommendations page for sippy cup recommendations - haven't checked for any responses yet.  However, several friends have told me that it's easier to start with a faster flow one until they get the hang of it, then switch to a leakproof one.

Deb - During Maya's growth spurt, she was ravenous.  She did wake in the middle of the night to eat a few nights, but at the time she was still ebf with no solids, so it took a few days for supply to equal demand.  She also had a cold and was teething the same week, so things were rough all around.  Since you can increase her intake immediately, hopefully it'll be a little easier.

Michelle - I find that errands distract Maya well too.  We have the 2nd car, so we're mobile, but it is so hot here (96 today, v. humid, heat index well over 100), I hate to leave the house in the afternoon.  Doing something outside is out of the question, but even to go to the store or the library, we have to get in the car.

Christine - When Maya had her cold, what helped the most was propping up her mattress.  It doesn't have to be very high - 6" ought to be enough - just enough to help her head drain.  Before I did that, Maya was waking up every 45min because she was so stuffed up.

Nikki - Is there any way FIL could participate in the bedtime routine?  Perhaps help with the bath (if you do a bath)?  Would he have any interest in helping?
