How often should they have a BM?
« on: August 08, 2005, 20:08:51 pm »
Once they've started solids, how often should babies have a BM? My son hasn't gone since the day before yesterday, so it's 2 days of no BM.
We've been on solids for 4 weeks and I haven't introduced anything new in ages. Should I be worried?

Not according to an article I just read...or my personal experience.  It said that baby's BM routines will change quite a bit after starting solids, sometimes skipping a day or two.  Every time my dd skipped a day, my dh would assume she was constipated every time she'd cry and he hasn't really been right yet.     I wouldn't worry for another day or two.  However, depending on what you've introduced so far, you could offer more of the "stool loosening foods" versus the "stop-em-up foods" just to make sure things keep moving.  Unless of course you're only on cereal and then I'd just make sure they're getting enough liquids as well.  HTH

Thank you.
He's had: rice cereal, butternut, carrots, pear and banana. I'll go and do some reading on what 'loosening up foods'  I can feed him. lol

my doctor always said it is the consistancy not the frequency of the stools.. but if it has been a couple of days i would say go ahead and give him some prune juice just to get things moving.. you can mix it in his cereal ---

avoid things like banans, rice, cheese if your lo is  constipated

I think pears are "stool loosening" foods so that should help if you keep offering that with the other things you listed....  YEAH!

I agree with Stacie who said things change a lot after solids are introduced.  Asher had 4 dirty diapers on Monday and zero on Tuesday and 2 yesterday.  :D
