need help with 14 week old waking up at night
« on: August 10, 2005, 22:02:23 pm »
my 14 week old son has been on easy for almost his whole (short) life. he is able to go 10 hours at night without a feeding, but he has started to wake up 2-3 times before he needs to eat. he isn't hungry, because he can go back to sleep with a paci and being reswaddled. i know tracy suggest putting lo's on a 4 hour easy when this begins to happen. the problem is that he needs 6 feedings to make it through the night, and we don't do a dream feed, so we can't fit all the feedings in on a 4 hour schedule. i am trying to work out a schedule that will help him be up more during the day, and hopefully sleep better at night. any suggestions at all would be so helpful. i am anxious for a full night's sleep:)
here is what i have been doing the past few days
5:15 E
back to sleep
7:00/7:30 E
8:30/9:00 S
10:30/11:00 E
12:30 S
2:30 E
4:30 S
5:15 awake
5:30 E
6:30 catnap
7:15 bath
7:30 E and bed
his waking times are not very consistent. and he is breastfed exclusively.
i hope this is enough info for someone to help:)

my ds is 4 months old and follows the same basic schedule - we also add a dreamfeed at 11.  HE is up throughout the night, and I can't figure out what we've done wrong.  Please pass on any advice you receive.

Since you are breastfeeding, I would highly suggest NOT going to a 4 hour schedule right now.  Even at 4 months, many breastfed babies are not ready for 4 hours, and it can really lower your supply.

I think it sounds like one of two things.  It could be developmental...has your baby started rolling over or is your baby getting ready to roll over?  If so, it might be due to this.  If it is, I'd suggest perfecting your swaddle so that it's really tight and maybe your baby won't be able to get out of it.

The other option is paci addiction.  Right now you're just waking up a few times to put the paci back in, but watch out because it could become 20 times a nite before you know it.  you might want to check out the props board for some more info.

since i posted this question, i decided maybe it was the paci that was the problem, so last night at 3 i made the decision to not use it. it has been hard--a lot of screaming--but i am shushing my head off, and hopefully he will get it.
thanks for the advice
