What do you do if baby (7weeks) wakes after only a short nap on the EASY plan and won't go back to sleep even after a lot of patting/shushing etc. She will be wide awake, but cranky because she didn't sleep very long, then not due for a feed for quite a while and hence very cranky/ratty.

If she's cranky, it probably means she is still sleepy and in that case, you try to extend her nap by using pat/shh.  Or you can go in before she stirs and try to keep her settled during the transition from light to deep sleep.  Does she take a paci?  You could try to put it back in before she wakes.  Do you swaddle?  She might be startling herself awake and swaddling would keep her from doing that.

HTH! :D
