Cheaper alternatives for baby cereals ?
« on: August 13, 2005, 14:39:07 pm »
Can anyone advice me,  my 5mth old boy loves his breakfast cereals, but they aren't cheap ! He likes the Hipp organic baby cereal with fruit in.

Can I give them adult cereals like 'Ready Brek' or weetabix ?

I already give him homemade veggies and he loves them.

Hi There,
It depends what age your baby is. I give dd ready brek and have done since she was about 7 months, though in saying that she wont eat it on its own so I have to mix it with milupa fruit salad mix. I also add a bit of pureed melon or pear to get some fruit in. I have tried weetabix about 11 times now, on it's own, with fruit but she just wont eat it, but I will keep trying

I'd hold off on more "adult" cereals until your DS has had a couple more months on solids. Baby cereals are more easily digested and contain ingredients that are much easier on his stomach. They are also specifically designed to give babies proper nutrition that is easily absorbed by their bodies. That said, I know how expensive baby cereal is, so here's a link to recipes for homemade...

The only issue I can see with making your own is that these aren't very high in iron, which your baby needs. If your DS is getting enough iron from another source, that shouldn't be a problem, but it's something to be aware of. Also, there's a book call "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron that has lots of homemade baby food ideas, cereal included. HTH!

Hi there,
Me again, just saw that your baby is only 5 months old, so yes maybe as tylersmommy said you could hold off for another month or 2. Weetabix is very hard on little tummies
