The happiest baby on the block
« on: August 13, 2005, 20:05:25 pm »
When Lise was born she had jaundice and slept for 2 weeks ... then my spirited angel emerged from this sleep state with a bang... coupled with reflux we had a BAD situatioin going on (especially since I imagined my baby was going to an Angel, smiling and cooing at me!!) COLIC was our middle name and with research stating that GAS was not the culprit ... what to do with CONSTANT inconsolable crying??? A friend then bought me TRACY's new book and also Dr.Harvey Karps The happiest baby on the block (DVD and book)!! It changed our life. At last we had a tool to use to effectively calm lise to a state where she will either fall asleep or be able to self calm into sleep.
5 s'ses (Cuddle cure)
  SWADDLE - very tightly!!
 SIDE lying - with you seated on a chair/couch put your knees together and feet about shouler width apart ... put baby on side on your legs with her head at your knees. put your hands over each other, palms facing up and cradle your babies head in your hands
 Swinging - this is tricky - quick movement of your knees (still held together) from left to rigth ... head must "wiggle" NOT YERK like "jello on a plate" dr Karps words!!
 SHUUUSHING - loud shhhhh next to babies ear (i used a HAIRDRYER, radio static or White noise CD) This was the trick to calming Lise
 Sucking - pacifier or your finger...
BUT - I recommend you borrow or buy the book or DVD ... much more info in there. Hope this helps someone!!!

We got this book from my husband's aunt for Christmas and it was really good to have for the first month.  I had heard so many parents talk about colicky babies that I read that book from front to cover to be prepared.  Our lo did not turn out to have colick (sorry ...  ) but I did end up using the swaddle and soother to put lo to sleep. My husband and I joke that the next one will be the complete oposite of our dd and we are prepared to battle colick and crying with the information from this book. :) .

A friend let me borrow the Happiest Baby book and I ended up buying a copy of my own.  I followed that during my DS's first 3 months.  Then I decided to check out the Baby Whisperer and it changed my whole outlook.  Sometimes I wonder if it's good or bad that I read the Tracy's book (only because ignorance is bliss).  I only feel that way when I'm exhausted and really tempted to do some accidental parenting to calm him down.  But it's so nice to be able to read his cues and know that he's crying because he's tired and not because he's hungry, as well as knowing that what I'm doing now will help him sleep and be an individual as he's growing.

We don't use the tecniques anymore (except white noise once in a while!) but it sure was a life saver the first 3 months when you cannot do PU/PD with baby!! I was so tired of just holding, rocking all the time and the strech from 1am - 5am - what a nightmare. I am so glad something worked well!! I really believe that this tecnique combined with Tracy's principles work realy well.

I also want to mention that the crying I am talking about here was MOSTLY the colicky crying!!! not necessarily crying because tired ... I still used shhhh/pat when putting down to sleep.
