no eating = no sleeping!
« on: August 13, 2005, 20:50:19 pm »
I have a 21 month old who has usually been the type that eats anything and everything that has been put in front of him.  Well in the past few weeks he has not been eating as much and has even been a picky eater which is driving me crazy.  He always eats breakfast pretty good in the morning (bowl of cereal) and he used to eat a great lunch but now he sometimes won't touch lunch or dinner.  I have tried cutting down on snacks between the meals (or sometimes not even giving him one before dinner) but he still won't eat dinner.   The problem has come in the past 2 weeks because now he is waking up in the middle of the night hungry!  How can I get him to eat more during the day?   He has always had favorites like applesauce or yogurt which he would always eat if nothing else and now he won't even eat those.  Just wondering if anyone else has been through this and I am really really hoping it is a short phase and he will start eating more soon!

Have you tried to give him a bedtime snack?

Could he be teething?  I know that when my ds got his molars he didn't eat much at all but would always chow down on the bedtime snack and milk pretty good.  Just be sure to offer healthy choices and not give in to offering junk food just to get him to eat.

Another thing you can do is keep a sippy of milk available to him all day so that he gets some calories that way.

Thanks Lana.  The teething thing crossed my mind too but he just got 4 molars in a while ago (that was great for sleeping too  ) so I'm not sure if he would be getting more or not.  I agree about the junk food thing, I am really trying to watch myself and make sure i don't give in to him just wanting "snacks".  Last night I actually did give him a little bed time snack of rasin bran cereal and i think it helped.  I have started giving him milk before bed again too which i haven't done for a while.  I just have to be careful that it isn't too close to bed time or else it kind of gives him a second wind.  I will keep offering him more milk too to help fill his tummy all day.  Thanks for the tips.

Has he got his eyeteeth yet?  Ewan's came in not long after his molars so it could be that.

I have found that applesauce or cheese and crackers make a really good bedtime snack and they are even nutritious :D .

Good luck.

he does hae one eye tooth that hasn't come in yet.  I will have to watch that one.  He still isn't eating dinner lately but he did great with lunch today and I am still offering a bed time snack.  So far so good, no waking up hungry! :)

Yay!!!
We've got the exact same situation - and it's so good to see that it's not just us.

Ava has pretty much stopped eating at the moment - not even the snack options.
She's taking on plenty of fluids though!
Naturally, as she's not eating, she wakes anywhere between 1 and 3am which isn't much fun.
We don't want to give her milk as it doesn't really aid the situation other than makes our sleep a bit easier.  Of course the later she wakes up then the less likely she is to eat breakfast if she's had milk in night.

We've tried bread or other snack items.  If we make it playful (ie throw it at her) then she'll eat a bit more than normal......

It must just be a phase at this age!
