Diflucan and liver damage?
« on: August 15, 2005, 20:18:07 pm »
Ds and I are battling thrush. The dr prescribed diflucan for both of us...ds is on it for 2 weeks and my OB only prescribed me to be on it for 7 days and then 1 pill a week for 3 weeks. Needless to say, that was not enough to knock it out and I'm having horrible breast pain and of course passing the thrush back to ds when nursing!  Anyway, my mom is very concerned because my brother was hospitalized with a horrible yeast infection throughout his entire body. She's trying to persuade me to stop nursing...NOT going to happen if I can help it. I talked to a nurse today and the LC recommends 2 pills of diflucan a day for 28 days to try to knock it out, but they have concerns about the liver...in rare cases it can cause liver damage. The OB was not in, so she's going to make sure he's okay with that dosage before calling it it. Anyone else on that much diflucan? I just have concerns over liver damage as well due to a family member that had liver damage (and subsequent liver transplant) due to medication. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

I was on Diflucan for 3 and a half weeks, 2 pills a day -- it helped me finally get back on track after recurring infections I was trying to tackle without Diflucan. BTW, I felt only small improvement for the first 10 days, then gradual improvement for a few more days, and then I finished my pills after all synmptoms were gone. You should do your own research, but when I was reading on the topic I learned that latest studies show minimal risks for baby as very little is passed on. Good luck!

i was on diflucan for 4 weeks once a day and my nugget the same time for 2 weeks and it finally killed it.  i would try to get you both on it at the same time, and then rather than take 2 a day, take it for a long period of time.

i agree with the earlier post, that i didn't notice a change until after a week, at least.

i also got great advice from my midwife to take acidophilus 3 x a day, plus 1/2 tsp of collodial silver.  we also threw out the paci and only gave a bottle once a day (and sterilized for 20 minutes in boiling water after use, plus applied nystatin cream to the nipple after boiling).  also, i stopped using nursing pads entirely.  this was super hard because i leak all the time, but i just wouldn't nurse in public and when nursing, would open both sides and let my other side drip into a burp rag while she fed.  i would wash my boobs after each feeding, no washcloth, just toss water on it.  and i started sleeping topless.

thrush is so horrible.  hang in there!

How big is your lo?  I ask this b/c my ped. didn't want Noel to take it until she was at least 10 lbs.  (I ended up persuading them to let her take it earlier since she was close and we really needed to get rid of the thrush!!!)  That said, if the diflucan you're talking about is coming through you, I wouldn't worry about it, b/c your lo will be getting a very minimal amount.  The difference is when the baby is taking it directly.  But also it depends on how big your lo is and how much he is getting (my friend who is a pharmacist says they won't prescribe an amount that will cause liver damage.)  HTH- and I hope you get it to go away soon- it is SO HARD- but dont' give up!

I just realized that you were referring more to the damage to you.  (Sorry- my mistake.)   Again, my friend the pharmacist said this is just about the only way to get rid of it- to stay on the medicine for a while.  They have to let you know of the possible side effects- and if you're concerned that you might already be at risk for liver damage, there is a way to test to see- that way you could make a more informed decision.  Then you can weigh the pros & cons- my feeling was I wanted to nurse her & make sure she got the benefits of that- but if we couldn't have gotten rid of it, I would know she had gotten the benefits for as long as possible.  Wishing you the best in this- hang in there!

Thank you!  My lo is 12 lbs and has been on Diflucan for a week and a half.  The ped just called in Nystatin since I was concerned about family history of liver problems.  My OB is putting me on Diflucan again for 4 weeks...just one pill a week!?  That concerns me that I won't be getting enough of it in my system to get rid of this...150mg per week is pretty far away from the 200mg per day that Dr. Jack Newman recommends.  Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see if we get better.
