Dream Feed help
« on: August 16, 2005, 01:51:14 am »
I just started EASY a week ago today, but I have never been able to get my dd to take a dream feed (she's 8 weeks old). She'll suck for about 10 minutes and then fall asleep, whether I'm offering her the breast or a bottle. I would really like it if she would take it so that she'd sleep longer after that. Any tips?

Hi Audra, some tips to keep your DD feeding - try stroking under her chin or behind her ear while you are feeding her. With Molly she doesn't normally like to have her head stroked so I have found that this annoys her enough to make her suck. She doesn't wake up, it just seems to wake her enough for her to realize there is a bottle in her mouth!
Also, I think I read in the BW book (could have been another book though I'm not sure) to try "walking" your fingers up and down their back. Don't know if this tickles them or what but it does seem to work as well.
The other common tricks are to rotate the nipple (if you are bottle feeding that is, heeheehee) or to try to pull the nipple out when she stops sucking. Sometimes that will help.
Good luck!

Great suggestions already!  Breast compression can also help - it increases the flow a bit and baby starts drinking more.  I would also sort of jiggle my breast a bit to stimulate the inside of her mouth (sort of remind her it was there!), and she'd suck some more.  How goes the rest of the night?

afraid to wake her up

I guess I've just been afraid to wake her up. I do the fingers up the spine thing during the day, but I'll give it a go tonight and see.

As far as breast compressions or jiggling it around, I can't do that because she just all the sudden closes her mouth and that's it - it's over. I can't get my breast back in her mouth.

Thanks for the suggestions!
