I started my DD on solids at 4 months, rice cereal with some banna, pears or applesauce...just a tsp. or tablespoon to start...she never finishes it.  How much should i be feeding her..I read topics where babies are eating a few tablespoons and such, what is the correct amount? and also i mix it with BM or formula not water...am i supposed to mix it with water instead?  new mom here if you can't tell

If you go to http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com it will give you a guideline for the amounts to feed homemade foods.  If you buy commercial food go to http://www.heinz.com and, well I go to Heinz Canada and you get a menu planner with amounts of food for each of their baby food stages. HTH

Jennc123,

My baby boy Roshan is 5 mths and 2 weeks old, and he's been on solids for about 6 wks now and took to it very easily.

At first he used to get quite frustrated, because he would get so frantic when he was hungry, he couldn't wait until I re-filled the spoon ! even though it was a couple of seconds apart !

I was confused as to how to feed him also, I started out giving him about 2 or 3 teaspoons, but he would always want more, so I bought these plastic freezable tubs that I use with homemade pureed veggies, when filled up they can take 4oz.  He used to eat about 2oz, and then he could manage the full 4oz pot, sometimes I give him one pot and half of another = 6oz, I can usually tell when he's had enough, because he looses interest and kinda looks as if he's going to puke !

The only thing he can manage 6 - 8 oz (in one sitting) is fruit, esp mangos.
His day goes like this:

7am: 150mls Milk
8am: 3 - 4 oz baby cereal
9am: Nap
11am: 4oz veggies & 3 - 4oz small tub of fruit, then no milk
1pm: nap
3pm: 150mls Milk
5pm: Nap
6pm: 4 to 8oz fruit or rusk in milk
7pm 120 - 150mls milk
11pm dream feedabout 120mls

Sometimes, esp in the evenings he doesn't stick to the 4 hr rule, but the above works well for him and he knows how to fall asleep by himself, because of the routine.

Hope this helps. Sorry if its a bit long-winded ! Its sunday evening and I've nothing better to do !

Just wanted to say, you're the best judge of how much your baby wants to eat. Some babies are small eaters, and if you go by standards, you will always feel, you are falling short, he's not getting enough, and will constantly try to feed him all day long, and that will put him off food further.

My lo is 8 months old today, and she has always been a small eater. I also worried constantly that she ate less by the "standards", but once I accepted that, both of us were much happier. When she was that age, all she ate was maybe one tbsp of solids in the whole day, with about 22 oz of milk, and I'm talking in a 24 hour period.

As long as your lo is active, is putting on weight, my advice to you would be to go with the flow. And always remenber, they eat solids at this age, mostly for practice. Most of their nutrition is still milk.

Good luck.

I have a similiar question, but it is in relation to the amount of milk to serve.  I started DS on solids 6 days ago and he loves it, but I am not sure whether I should also be reducing the amount of milk I give him.  He currently has 5 bottles of 8oz.  Will he automatically drink less once he eats more or should I put less in the bottles?  I fed him 2tbs rice cereal today mixed with about 1oz of formula for dinner and 1tbs apple sauce for lunch.  Today was the first day that I gave him solids for two meals

Also, at the moment I seem to be pouring the food into his mouth rather than him sucking it off the spoon.  Is this Ok?  He doesn't gag or anything and quite happily eats it once it makes it into his mouth and very little gets spat out
