inching his way around the crib - what can i do?
« on: August 23, 2005, 03:50:42 am »
hi ladies - hope this is ok to post here...
the latest trick is worming his way around the crib on his back.  first using his butt, then when his feet get to the sides, he uses the slats as a kind-of ladder.  and around he goes, only when he gets to 6o'clock, he gets wedged in and calls out for help.

i never used bumpers or comforters or anything for fear of sids, so he was always swaddled, then (and now) in a sleepsack.  do i have to start tucking him into a sheet or something?  honestly, i have no idea.

if you're reading this and have any clues for the clueless, please let me know!

I suspect he's just figuring out his newfound mobility. I think as long as he's not getting hurt in any way you could just ride it out. We went through this with dd when she learned to roll over and then when she learned how to crawl. It was a bit tiring but she eventually figured it out and stopped calling for help.

We never had bumpers or anything either and used a sleep sack until she was around 7 1/2 months old and she outgrew them. Now we just use sleepers and a light crocheted blanket.

I hope that helps a bit!  :D

Olivia butt scoots up the whole cot - just so you know she is in a sleep sack and tucked in tight with a top sheet and blanket - she i a strong girl and nothing will keep her in!  we find her at the top of the cot all the time.

Just wanted to add Debra is right in the tightly tucked in blanket/sheet whatever... very important at that age!  :)

Susan:

I found a breathable crib bumper at WalMart.com - it stops baby from getting stuck but is mesh like so they can't suffocate-

look:

hope this helps a little

And the fun begins! :) Congratulations.

Seriouslly, it's totally normal, and it's only first step. Soon he'll be rolling, then crawling in circles, then standing up, then running laps, until he decides to jump out. We are not here yet, thankfully.

Adrian was inching his way in the sleepsack wrapped tightly in the miracle blanket. We used to find him often rotated 180 degrees in the crib. We are lucky that he is usually not bothered by hitting the crib, he seems to have separate rules for inside and outside of the crib.

If your lo is bothered, you might want to look for one of these breathable bumpers as it's been suggested here. If not, let him be.

Susan, my lo has been rolling over for a few weeks but, in the last few days, has started to roll over and inch around the crib.  I'm amazed at how far he can get without actually being able to crawl yet!

So, I don't have any advice since I'm in the same boat.  I suppose 'patience' is key.  ;-)  I personally just make sure to check up on him in case he's woken up without crying (rare but happens).
