Pulling up in crib is driving me CRAZY!!!! What do YOU do??
« on: August 24, 2005, 15:05:24 pm »
She has been pulling up for about a month now and is getting very good at it and even lets go of her one arm & likes to hang.  I try to let her get a lot of practice during the day, since that's all she wants to do as soon as I set her down.  During naps it is getting to the point where I just don't know what to do.  I put her down today after 2hr45mins of being awake for 1st nap.  She pulled up & pulled up.  I left her for a bit & came back & she's just standing there playing.  I tried to lay her down for about 5mins, over & over & over, but she just keeps on getting up.  After about 15 mins, she's getting a little annoyed that I'm trying to lay her down & starts to fuss & cry.  Finally after 20 mins I take her to my bed & hold her legs down with my legs, and she's good & mad.  Cries & won't take the paci. Finally it gets to where she's screaming & crying & won't stop.  I give in and give her the boob.
Yesterday for her 2nd nap, after being awake 3hrs, she did the same thing, pulling up.  WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??????? Please share what you do when you lo is constantly pulling up?

Matthew's mommy warned me this is the next obstacle, and, man, is she right!! :D  Jane, help???

When Tyler went through that, we just let it go until the novelty wore off. Usually what would happen is that he'd happily mess around in his crib for quite awhile, then he'd start to get overtired and cranky. When the crying and fussing started, that's when I'd intervene and do PU/PD or just PD. Things were pretty ugly for a couple of weeks, but the fun wore off eventually and he was back to normal. It's frustrating, but I think it's important to stay consistent and not make yourself crazy trying to force sleep.

We went through the same thing when he figured out how to walk in the crib, run in the crib, etc...it never ends!!!!

Let her and go do your business. If she is not upset, let her use up some enegery and once she is tired and starts getting annoyed lay her down.

Adrian likes to play a bit in the crib before going to sleep, either for naps or night. It can go for half an hour sometimes. Often he'll stand up as I leave the room. If I was to stop and lay him down it would become a game in a hurry. Laying him down is not an issue anymore since he knows how to go down on his own now, and he does it. But at this stage, help her get down when she had it enough. I swear, sometimes it seems like he falls asleep in the middle of wiggling or laying down.

It won't take her long to figure out how to lay down on her own and if you always lay her down she won't get a chance to do it on her own. And naps are much better time to give her chances than at 4 in the morning. ;)

Good luck.

Thanks Melissa & Sandra! :D I guess I need to just let her be, at least for 10-15mins.  I just have this fear of her getting sooo tired & screaming because of it.  And when she screams, nothing calms her down, except maybe the boob.  She never starts crying at the beginning.  She's just very happy to pull up.  I guess I'm one of those moms that if she doesn't fall asleep within certain amount of time, I freak.  Thanks again.

I did that too, but once around the age where you dd is things start to change and you need to adjust.

They start tolerating being tired much better and the overtired scream sessions are fewer. That was a very welcome change for us. At the same time, they don't fall asleep in two minutes flat anymore.

We've always put Adrian to sleep drowsy but awake. I remember one night, couple months ago, suddenly at the end of the routine he was wide awake, laughing and talking. I decided to go ahead and put him down as if he was drowsy. He sat in the crib, laughed at us as we were leaving (no cry!). We turned the lights off and closed the door. We could hear him for the next 10 minutes talking to his sock (that's his security blankie) and then suddenly things got quiet. We were schocked. The next night was the same. And it's been like that since. Amazing how quickly it changed.

Good luck!

Hi Jane,
I can't believe I'm talking about my baby pulling up already!! She's 8mos!!!  It seemed like yesterday I was talking with you about her screaming & crying, not going to sleep at bedtime & rolling over & rocking back & forth in bed & short naps - 45mins ....  So I'm sure the walking is coming soon.  And believe it or not, I do think it's kinda funny. I have to laugh or else I will cry.  Next thing you know I will be on the Toddler Board
