Growth spurt and keeping to the schedule
« on: August 24, 2005, 20:12:03 pm »
My son is 6 weeks old and I'm about to get started with the EASY technique ( I hope I succeed!). He seems to be in a growth spurt at the moment...feeding every 1.5 hrs. How do I adapt these feeds to the 3 hr. EASY routine? I suppose those who cluster feed at night have a similar dilemma.

When your little one is going through a growth spurt you should feed him on demand, otherwise your milk supply will stay at the same level while your son's needs for milk will increase. It works demand = supply. Therefore, it is wise to allow your little one to work on your milk supply during a period of growth spurt and start EASY when he is back to his regular nursing pattern. Trying to fit him now into 3 hour EASY would cause problems for you and him, he would be hungry and unsatisfied and you would end up with supply problems.

Just let him nurse as often as he wants, this usually takes anywhere between 24 hours and 7 days, but I have heard of 10 days as well. After that you can introduce EASY.

Next growth spurt is usually around 3 months but this may vary and some babies go through it up to 2 weeks earlier/later. Another one is at 6 months.

Good luck!

I'm thinking your question has more to do with- how do you still do naps and such when they are feeding so frequently (and inconsisently?)
The best thing is that you are following Tracy's methods, so you are watching for cues already.  So, instead of sticking to a schedule since you are feeding "on demand" during the growth spurt, just keep watching for sleepy cues after eating.  Your lo will also need sleep during the spurt, and it's very easy to mistake sleep cues for hunger cues (especially that early in the game!)  But if your lo falls asleep nursing, that's ok too!   Don't worry about the schedule right now.  Just don't forget that the spurt shouldn't last too long, so you don't want to end up with a snacker.
congrats on your new little one!
